Akio Ōtsuka

Akio Ōtsuka’s Path from the Stage to Seiyuu Stardom
Before he ever stood in a recording booth, Ōtsuka spent his twenties driving a tow truck, unconvinced that acting suited a man’s life. That changed once he watched his father, veteran seiyuu Chikao Ōtsuka, work from behind the scenes. After training at the Bungakuza acting school, he built a foundation in theater before moving into voice work, debuting with Mausu Promotion (then Ezaki Production) in 1988. His low, weathered voice quickly set him apart from more youthful contemporaries, and directors began casting him in roles built around gravity and restraint.
Solid Snake and the Metal Gear Legacy
Hideo Kojima cast Ōtsuka as Solid Snake after seeing his performance as Anavel Gato in Mobile Suit Gundam 0083, and the role grew to include Naked Snake, Solidus Snake, and Venom Snake across the Metal Gear series. Kojima has said he modeled Snake’s mannerisms, down to how he smokes, on details he observed in Ōtsuka himself. The casting carried personal weight too: Chikao Ōtsuka later voiced Big Boss, letting father and son share a series built partly around the theme of surpassing one’s father.
Jigen Daisuke and the Weight of Succession
In 2021, Ōtsuka took over as Jigen Daisuke in Lupin III Part 6, succeeding Kiyoshi Kobayashi after his 52 years in the role. He has taken on inherited parts before, including Yamada Denzō in Nintama Rantarō after his father’s passing in 2015, the same year he received the Tomiyama Kei Award at the 9th Seiyu Awards. These successions reflect an unusual trust placed in him by both fans and creators to carry forward characters with decades of history behind them.
Batou, Blackbeard, and a Career Built on Range
Ōtsuka voices Batou in the Ghost in the Shell franchise, Shunsui Kyōraku in Bleach, Marshall D. Teach in One Piece, the title role in Black Jack, and All For One in My Hero Academia. He also works steadily as the Japanese dubbing voice of Steven Seagal, Nicolas Cage, Denzel Washington, and Samuel L. Jackson. In 2026, he left Mausu Promotion after decades with the agency and joined Topone, a newly founded management company, continuing recent work that includes Darwin’s Incident, The Demon King’s Daughter Is Too Kind!!, and Akane-banashi.
