Tara Strong’s Four Decades at the Heart of American Animation

At four years old, Tara Strong was already performing on stage in Toronto. By thirteen she had a sitcom. Before turning fourteen, she had claimed her first animated lead – the title role of Hello Kitty in Hello Kitty’s Furry Tale Theater. What followed over the next four decades is a body of work that places her among the most recognized voice performers in the history of North American animation.

Strong (born Tara Lyn Charendoff on February 12, 1973) grew up in a Russian-Jewish household in Toronto, Ontario. Her grandparents had fled pogroms in Russia before settling in Canada, and her grandfather served as a cantor. She performed in Yiddish theater as a child, memorizing lines phonetically. When she moved to Los Angeles in 1994, she already carried over 20 animated series credits on her resume.

The Powerpuff Girls, Teen Titans, and the Cartoon Network Era

Two roles defined Strong’s arrival as a fixture of early-2000s animation. Her casting as Bubbles in The Powerpuff Girls gave her a character deceptively layered beneath a cheery exterior – one she revisited across multiple series revivals. Then came Raven in Teen Titans, a turn that demanded a grounded, measured delivery in stark contrast to the show’s more comedic ensemble. Where Bubbles leaned into warmth and pitch, Raven required restraint. Navigating both simultaneously demonstrated something audiences and directors came to rely on: the ability to hold completely distinct performances without one bleeding into the other.

During the same period she voiced Dil Pickles in Rugrats, Timmy Turner across the entire run of The Fairly OddParents, and Ben Tennyson in the original Ben 10. Each of those franchises ran for years. Each demanded she return, adapt, and maintain consistency across shifting creative teams and production eras.

Harley Quinn and the Batman: Arkham Series

When Rocksteady Studios began developing Batman: Arkham Asylum, Strong had already voiced Harley Quinn in animated productions. Her work across the Arkham series – Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, Arkham Knight, and the 2024 VR title Batman: Arkham Shadow – gave Harley a through-line that tracked psychological disintegration and, in later entries, something closer to agency. The performance earned her an Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences award and helped cement voice acting’s legitimacy as a craft within prestige game development.

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the Brony Phenomenon

When My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic launched in 2010, Strong took on Twilight Sparkle – a character who functioned as the show’s narrative anchor. The series attracted an unexpectedly broad audience, and Twilight Sparkle sat at the center of that cultural conversation for nearly a decade. Strong’s Daytime Emmy nomination for the role in 2014 acknowledged what fans had recognized earlier: the performance held genuine dramatic weight. She continued voicing the character through 2020, including the feature film.

Video Game Credits and Recent Work

Strong’s game catalog runs wide. Her turn as Rikku in Final Fantasy X-2 won an Interactive Achievement Award from the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences in 2004 – one of the earliest major industry recognitions for voice performance in games. She later appeared in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker as Paz Ortega Andrade, Mortal Kombat X, and the lollipop chainsaw remaster Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP in 2024. Her most recent confirmed game credit is Elisa in Rusty Rabbit, the 2025 action-adventure title.

On television, she continued carrying major franchise roles into 2025, including Timmy Turner in The Fairly OddParents across the full original series run, Bubbles and Truffles in Jellystone!, and voice work in Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie. A 2026 project remained listed on her IMDb page at the time of writing, keeping her active across more than four decades of continuous output.
