Tia Ballard’s Path from Paris, Texas to the Funimation Booth

The road to a voice acting career rarely starts in a town of 25,000 people in northeast Texas – but for Tia Ballard, Paris was exactly the right place to be. After attending a local anime convention and realizing Funimation’s studio sat only two hours away, she made the pivot that would reshape her professional life entirely. She had already enrolled in the Disney College Program and was working toward a theatre degree when the pieces clicked into place. Ballard graduated from Paris Junior College in 2006 with an associate degree in theatre and art, then set her sights on the Dallas-Fort Worth recording pipeline. Her debut came in 2009 with a minor role in Dragonaut: The Resonance under the guidance of Monica Rial – a quiet entry point for a career that would eventually span over 250 characters.

Fairy Tail, Kamisama Kiss, and the Funimation Years

The early 2010s established Ballard as a reliable presence across Funimation’s expanding catalog. Her work as Happy in Fairy Tail – a blue flying cat who serves as comic relief and emotional anchor for the series – ran across hundreds of episodes and made her one of the more recognizable voices in the Funimation stable. Around the same time, she was building out a parallel set of quieter, more emotionally grounded performances: Mizore Shirayuki in Rosario + Vampire, the perpetually lovestruck snow woman whose deadpan delivery Ballard made unexpectedly endearing; Nanami Momozono in Kamisama Kiss, the reluctant land goddess navigating divine politics; and Yoshino in Date A Live, a spirit character who communicates almost exclusively through a hand puppet. These roles showed off range that went well beyond the mini-moe typecasting that was easy to project onto her based on vocal register alone.

Zero Two and a Career-Defining Performance

DARLING in the FRANXX arrived in 2018 as one of the more emotionally complicated anime of that production cycle, and Zero Two became its center of gravity. The character moves through cruelty, vulnerability, obsession, and grief across 24 episodes, and Ballard’s English performance drew significant attention in a dubbing landscape where female leads in mecha series rarely get this much material to work with. The role expanded her profile beyond the Funimation core audience and stands as the performance most cited when her name comes up in casting discussions. She has continued adding credits since – including Kagura Sohma in the 2019 Fruits Basket remake, Carrot in One Piece, Itsuki Nakano in The Quintessential Quintuplets, and Yashiro Nene in Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun – while also branching into work with Sentai Filmworks and Iyuno Los Angeles.

The Directing Track and What Comes Next

Since the mid-2010s, Ballard has worked steadily as an ADR director and assistant director across multiple productions – a credit list that includes Chain Chronicle: The Light of Haecceitas, In Another World With My Smartphone, and Kakuriyo: Bed and Breakfast for Spirits, among others. The move into directing is a natural fit for someone who co-created the Super Mario Bros.-themed webcomic Koopasta and has consistently described writing and storytelling as parallel interests. As of 2026, her credits continue to accumulate – with a role in Classroom of the Elite: Second Year among her more recent confirmed appearances – and her dual foothold as performer and director puts her in a position few voice actresses at her level occupy simultaneously.
