Daman Mills and the Weight of a Villain’s Legacy
When Christopher Ayres – the longtime voice of Frieza in the Dragon Ball franchise – became too ill to continue, the role fell to a then-rising Seattle-born actor who had quietly been building one of the most formidable resumes in the English dubbing world. Daman Mills did not simply fill the vacancy. He carried it with the kind of aristocratic menace that had made Frieza a cultural landmark for decades. By 2021, following Ayres’ passing, Mills became the permanent voice of one of anime’s most iconic villains – a responsibility he has honored across Dragon Ball Super, Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, and numerous games in the franchise.
From Funimation Rooms to Square Enix Stages
Mills entered the industry around 2014 with early credits at Funimation, where quick-turn simuldub schedules shaped him into a precise, high-output performer. That foundation gave him range that stretched far beyond any single franchise. His work as Weiss the Immaculate in Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade brought a theatrical edge to one of that sequel’s most menacing presences, while Kaoru “Cherry Blossom” Sakurayashiki in SK8 the Infinity showcased something entirely different – a gentle gravity wrapped around emotional depth. His voice work in Genshin Impact as the magician Lyney and as Takaya Sakaki in Persona 3 Reload further cemented his reputation for inhabiting characters that balance charm with danger.
Beyond Dragon Ball: A Career Built on Range
Across hundreds of credits for Funimation, Crunchyroll, Bang Zoom! Entertainment, SDI Media, and NYAV Post, Mills has voiced characters in My Hero Academia, Bleach, Haikyuu, Tokyo Ghoul:re, Trigun: Stampede, Evangelion, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, and Pokémon Horizons. He also serves as an ADR director – a role that speaks to his understanding of the craft from both sides of the glass. In 2026, his casting as Johnny Joestar in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run marked one of the most anticipated reveals in recent dub history, with early reception pointing to a performance sharply different from his usual confident antagonists.
