Sung Jinwoo

From the bottom of the hunter rankings to the top of the world, no ascent in recent anime history has been quite as relentless as Sung Jinwoo's. Produced by A-1 Pictures and premiered in January 2024, Solo Leveling follows this once-forgotten E-Rank Hunter as he is chosen by a mysterious program called the System, which grants him the singular ability to grow stronger without limit.

Sung Jinwoo’s Journey as the Shadow Monarch

What sets Jinwoo apart from the typical shonen hero is where he starts: not merely underpowered, but publicly mocked as the weakest hunter in all of South Korea. He pushed through dangerous dungeons simply to support his comatose mother and younger sister Jinah, driven by quiet desperation rather than any grand ambition. Everything changed inside the Double Dungeon, a near-death experience that selected him as the sole Player of the System, a gaming-like interface visible only to him that issues quests, rewards, and powers no other human possesses. Through this, he eventually inherits the mantle of the Shadow Monarch from his predecessor Ashborn, commanding an army of resurrected fallen enemies and wielding abilities that place him in a class of his own. Outside of combat, Jinwoo remains grounded and easygoing, with none of the arrogance his power would seem to invite, but inside a fight, he is cold, methodical, and utterly without mercy toward those who threaten the people he loves.

Who Voices Sung Jinwoo in Solo Leveling?

Aleks Le voices Sung Jinwoo in the English dub, produced by Crunchyroll. Le is widely recognized for bringing Zenitsu Agatsuma to life in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, a role that required a completely different register from the controlled intensity he brings to Jinwoo. His performance earned him the Best Voice Artist Performance award at the 2025 Crunchyroll Anime Awards. In the original Japanese version, the role belongs to Taito Ban, a voice actor affiliated with Office Osawa who is known for voicing Amane Fujimiya in The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten. Ban has spoken publicly about the physical toll of recording the series, describing sessions where he pushed himself to the point of exhaustion to capture Jinwoo’s evolution from timid underdog to the unstoppable Shadow Monarch.
