Texas Christian University trained many theater students, but few of its 2003 graduates took as unexpected a route to fame as Travis Hampton Willingham. After relocating to Los Angeles with plans to pursue on-camera work, his considerable height – six feet four inches – proved a liability in traditional casting. His agent pointed him toward voice recording studios, and the city turned out to be teeming with that kind of work. What started as a pragmatic pivot became a calling that now stretches across more than 300 credited roles in anime, animation, and video games.

Roy Mustang and the Fullmetal Alchemist Breakthrough

The career-defining early credit came through the Funimation dub of Fullmetal Alchemist, where Willingham took on Colonel Roy Mustang – the calculating, flame-wielding State Alchemist whose arc across both the original 2003 series and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood remains one of English-language anime dubbing’s most cited performances. The role established his command of authoritative, complex characters and put his deep baritone in front of a generation of anime fans. Thor, Marvel Animation, and a Decade-Long Franchise Tenure

Few characters in animated television have been held by a single voice actor across as many series as Willingham’s Thor. Starting in 2012, he carried the role through Avengers Assemble, Ultimate Spider-Man, Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., and Guardians of the Galaxy, while also voicing the character in video games including Marvel’s Avengers and Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. Critical Role and the Business of Independent Storytelling

What began in 2015 as a private birthday game among friends became one of the most significant independent media stories in recent entertainment history. Willingham joined the Critical Role ensemble as Grog Strongjaw, a goliath barbarian whose appetite for combat and drink belied his creator’s obvious comic timing. When the group’s Kickstarter campaign for an animated adaptation launched in 2019 with a $750,000 goal, it closed at over $11 million – the highest-funded film and video Kickstarter campaign to that point. The resulting Amazon Prime series, The Legend of Vox Machina, brought Grog to a mainstream audience. Willingham has since played Fjord in Campaign 2 and both Sir Bertrand Bell and Chetney Pock O’Pea in Campaign 3, with Teor Pridesire currently active in Campaign 4. As CEO of Critical Role Productions, he also oversees the company’s expansion into new formats, including the forthcoming Mighty Nein animated series under an Amazon Studios deal.

Outside the franchise anchors, Willingham’s game credits reveal the range that sustained two-plus decades of steady work. Guile in the Street Fighter franchise, Knuckles the Echidna across Sonic titles from 2010 to 2018, Wilson Fisk in Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Jaro Tapal in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Raiden in Mortal Kombat 1, Harvey Dent in Batman: The Telltale Series – each entry reflects a casting instinct toward characters defined by physicality, authority, or moral weight.
