Matthew Porretta

Matthew Porretta’s Voice and the Remedy Universe
Few careers in video game voice acting are as tightly woven into a single creative universe as Matthew Porretta’s. Since 2010, the Connecticut-born actor has served as the definitive voice of Alan Wake across every Remedy Entertainment title where the character appears – the original Alan Wake, Alan Wake’s American Nightmare, Quantum Break, Control, and the critically acclaimed 2023 sequel Alan Wake II. His collaboration with Remedy spans over fifteen years, making him one of the most consistent long-term anchors in the studio’s connected fiction.
Alan Wake II and the Dark Place
The 2023 release of Alan Wake II gave Porretta his most demanding assignment yet. He voiced not only the tortured novelist trapped in the supernatural Dark Place, but also the villainous doppelganger Mr. Scratch and reprised Dr. Casper Darling for the game’s New Game Plus content. The following year, Porretta returned as Alan Wake and Mr. Scratch in the Dead by Daylight crossover chapter and lent his voice to Alan Wake II: Night Springs (2024), the standalone DLC expanding the Remedy universe. In 2026, he reprised Dr. Casper Darling in Control Resonant.
Beyond Remedy – Stage, Screen, and Other Games
Long before any video game credit, Porretta built his career on Broadway and in front of the camera. At 25 he was already a Broadway veteran studying at the Manhattan School of Music. His screen breakthrough came with Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993), playing Will Scarlet O’Hara for director Mel Brooks, followed by the lead in the TV series The New Adventures of Robin Hood and recurring roles on Beverly Hills, 90210 and Wings. His game credits outside Remedy include Marco Graziani and Mooch in Starfield (2023), plus additional voices in Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2.
Performance in the Blood
The performing arts run deep in the Porretta family. His father, Frank Porretta, was a celebrated American tenor with an extensive career at the New York City Opera. His mother, Roberta, a spinto soprano and former Miss Ohio 1956, later earned a degree from the Juilliard School. All four of Matthew’s siblings found their way into entertainment. That background in music and live performance – the breath control, the emotional immediacy – surfaces clearly in the weight Porretta gives to Alan Wake’s internal monologue.
