Ali Wong’s Voice in Animation: From Tuca & Bertie to Jentry Chau vs. the Underworld
Long before the Emmy attention and the Golden Globe win for Beef, Ali Wong was quietly stacking an impressive animation resume. Her voice work spans Netflix originals, Disney/Pixar features, and adult animated comedies – a body of work that now runs parallel to her live-action career rather than trailing behind it.
Bertie and the Tuca & Bertie Years
From 2019 to 2022, Wong anchored one of animation’s most emotionally complex comedies as Bertie, the anxious songbird at the center of Tuca & Bertie. The show, created by Lisa Hanawalt and co-starring Tiffany Haddish, earned Wong an Annie Award nomination for Outstanding Achievement for Voice Acting in an Animated Television/Broadcast Production. She served double duty as executive producer throughout the series’ run on Netflix and later Adult Swim – a creative stake that went well beyond the recording booth.
Big Mouth and the Human Resources Universe
Starting in 2017, Wong voiced Ali in Netflix’s Big Mouth, appearing across 17 episodes through 2023. The role extended into the spinoff Human Resources in 2022, where she voiced Becca Lee across five episodes – adding two series to one interconnected animated universe.
Disney, Pixar, and One-Off Roles
On the feature side, Wong provided the voice of Felony in Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018) and Officer Gore in Pixar’s Onward (2020). She also voiced General Olivia in The Lego Ninjago Movie (2017), Super Super Big Doctor in Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Candace Against the Universe (2020), and Twisty in a 2018 episode of OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes. Earlier, she voiced Maddy in a 2015 episode of BoJack Horseman and Sylvia in American Dad!
Jentry Chau vs. the Underworld – A New Lead Role
In December 2024, Wong took on her most demanding animation role yet: Jentry Chau, a Chinese-American teenager with supernatural fire powers who battles demons from the Chinese underworld in a small Texas town. The Netflix series, created by Echo Wu, put Wong front and center across all 13 episodes of the first season a full lead role that she also executive produced. The project marked the clearest statement yet that her animation work is a deliberate creative lane, not a side gig.
Steps and the Role of Lilith
Premiering November 20, 2026, on Netflix, Steps hands Wong the lead in a Cinderella retelling told from the stepsisters’ point of view. Directed by Alyce Tzue and John Ripa and produced by Amy Poehler, the film casts Wong as Lilith a stepsister wrongly blamed for stealing the Fairy Godmother’s wand, accidentally turning her sister Margot (Stephanie Hsu) into a frog, and throwing the kingdom into chaos. Opposite an all-star cast that includes Amanda Seyfried as Cinderella, Bette Midler as the Fairy Godmother, and Daniel Radcliffe as The Prince, Wong leads the first feature animated entirely in-house at Netflix Animation Studios.
