Lilith

Lilith’s Journey and Character Arc in Steps

Sick of living in Cinderella’s shadow, Lilith makes a bold, chaotic move: she steals the Fairy Godmother’s magic wand and proceeds to accidentally hijack the Royal Ball, turning her sister Margot into a frog in the process. What follows is an unlikely alliance between Lilith, Cinderella, and a surprisingly charming troll named Gef as they race to save the kingdom and undo the magical mayhem. At Annecy 2026, director Alyce Tzue described Lilith as someone who “does not fit in at all,” framing her as a deeply relatable outsider whose edge masks a core need to belong. The film even opens with Lilith directly calling the original Cinderella story “character assassination,” setting the tone for a character who is abrasive, funny, and achingly self-aware all at once.

Who Voices Lilith in Steps?

Ali Wong brings Lilith to life, and it is a match that director Alyce Tzue has called “incredibly special.” Wong is best known to live-action audiences for her Emmy and Golden Globe-winning performance as Amy Lau in Netflix’s Beef, but her voice work runs deep: she voiced Bertie across all three seasons of Tuca and Bertie and has lent her sharp comedic delivery to Big Mouth, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and Onward. Her ability to balance raw frustration with genuine vulnerability makes Lilith feel less like a redeemed villain and more like someone who was never a villain to begin with.
