Aaron Dismuke’s Journey from Child Star to Dubbing Cornerstone

Most voice actors spend years grinding through small roles before landing anything substantial. Aaron Dismuke did it the other way around. At twelve, he was carrying the emotional weight of one of the most beloved anime dubs in Funimation’s catalog – Alphonse Elric in Fullmetal Alchemist (2003). His cousin, voice director Justin Cook, recognized early potential and opened the door, but everything after that Dismuke earned on the microphone. The result was one of the most distinctive child performances in English-language anime dubbing: a boy in a suit of armor, voiced with a kind of quiet devastation that made international audiences genuinely feel Alphonse’s impossible situation.

He started even earlier than Fullmetal Alchemist, at age nine, voicing Hiro Sohma and young Akito Sohma in Fruits Basket (2001). That early grounding in Funimation’s Texas-based production pipeline shaped everything that followed.

The Fullmetal Alchemist Problem – and How He Solved It

Puberty ended Dismuke’s run as Alphonse in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, where Maxey Whitehead took over the role. For many child performers, that kind of displacement signals the end. Dismuke acknowledged the awkward limbo period himself, noting in a 2023 Crunchyroll interview that he was “one of the lucky few in this business who’ve had something approaching job security.” That security came because he retooled – developing his adult range rather than chasing sounds he couldn’t sustain anymore. He returned to reprise Alphonse in the live-action Fullmetal Alchemist film on Netflix, a full-circle moment that underlined how completely he had rebuilt his career on different terms.

Dr. Stone and the Role That Defined His Comeback

Senku Ishigami in Dr. Stone became the anchor of Dismuke’s second chapter. The character demanded something unusual – high-intensity intellect, delivered fast, with no pause for sentiment. Dismuke brought a manic energy to Senku that matched the manga’s pace without tipping into parody. He carried the role through Dr. Stone: Stone Wars, Dr. Stone: Ryusui, Dr. Stone: New World, and Dr. Stone: Science Future (2025), making the character one of the most consistent presences across multiple seasons of any Funimation dub. The role also coincided with his 2022 COVID-related vocal health crisis, where he temporarily had to step back from several ongoing characters – a period that highlighted just how central he had become to multiple active productions simultaneously.

Kaiju No. 8 and a Broadening Range

Gen Narumi, the seventh captain of the First Division in Kaiju No. 8 (2024-2025), marked another gear shift. Where Senku runs on frantic cleverness, Narumi operates with the kind of cool authority that requires a different vocal register entirely. Dismuke handled the transition cleanly across both seasons. The role confirmed that he wasn’t typecast as the brilliant-teenager archetype – his range now covers multiple character types across ongoing shonen properties.

Behind the Glass – Direction and Script Work

Performing was never the whole picture. Dismuke also built a parallel career as an ADR director and script writer, taking the helm on dubs including Nanbaka, Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, Black Clover, and Dr. Stone. That dual positioning – performer and director on the same series – gives him an unusual vantage point inside Funimation’s production process. He attended the University of North Texas, adding formal education to the craft apprenticeship he started as a child.

Credit Range Beyond the Marquee Roles

Outside the headline titles, Dismuke’s catalog covers an unusually wide spread. Leonardo Watch in Blood Blockade Battlefront, Prince Arslan in The Heroic Legend of Arslan, William James Moriarty in Moriarty the Patriot, Hanzô Urushihara/Lucifer in The Devil Is a Part-Timer!, Miyuki Shirogane in Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, Hyoma Chigiri in Blue Lock, and Twelve in Terror in Resonance all reflect a performer comfortable moving between lead and supporting work across very different genres. His 2024 credit as Glorio in Dragon Ball DAIMA extended that range into one of the most high-profile franchises in anime history.
