In 2018, he co-founded BLACK SHIP.

Jun Fukuyama’s Rise from Aoni Juku to Anime Icon

The name Fukuyama Jun (福山 潤) carries a specific weight in the Japanese animation industry – the weight of a voice that reshaped what a seiyuu could be. Born November 26, 1978, in Fukuyama, Hiroshima Prefecture, and raised in Takatsuki, Osaka, he entered the world of voice acting through an unlikely door: following a high school crush to Aoni Juku Osaka, the training school affiliated with Aoni Production. She eventually dropped out. He did not. His professional debut came in 1997 with a radio commercial, and his first full anime credit followed in 1998 with Record of Lodoss War. By 2000, he had landed his first leading role in the mecha series TRI-ZENON, planting his flag early as a performer capable of carrying a series.

Code Geass and the Role That Changed Everything

Before Code Geass, Fukuyama built steady credits playing earnest heroes and gentle aristocratic types – the kind of roles that kept him employed but rarely made headlines. That changed in 2006 when director Goro Taniguchi deliberately cast against his established image, placing him as the calculating, morally complex Lelouch Lamperouge in Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. The performance landed with immediate force. Within a year, Fukuyama had won Best Lead Actor at the 1st Seiyu Awards in 2007 and the Tokyo International Anime Fair Best Voice Actor prize in 2009. The role became a cultural touchstone, and it fundamentally rewired the kinds of characters he was offered. Manipulative strategists, emotionally layered antiheroes, and figures with hidden depths became his signature territory.

Koro-sensei, Joker, and a Career Built on Range

What followed Code Geass was two decades of sustained high-profile casting. Koro-sensei in Assassination Classroom demanded an entirely different instrument – a character who could pivot between comedic absurdity and genuine emotional devastation, often within a single scene. Fukuyama delivered both without seams. In the gaming space, his performance as Joker in Persona 5 brought the same layered intensity to a player-insert protagonist – a delicate balancing act that resonated strongly with the franchise’s international audience. Other landmark credits include King in The Seven Deadly Sins, Kraft Lawrence in Spice and Wolf (reprised in the 2024 remake Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf), Hua Cheng in Heaven Official’s Blessing, Yukio Okumura in Blue Exorcist, and the long-running role of Ei Sei in Kingdom, which extended through its sixth season in 2025. His 2026 credits include Nearco in the Liar Game anime and Yoshitsune Asama in Nippon Sangoku.

BLACK SHIP and the Business of Voice Acting

Fukuyama’s career took a structural turn in April 2018 when he and fellow seiyuu Shinnosuke Tachibana left Axl-One to co-found BLACK SHIP Inc., with Fukuyama serving as co-CEO and co-Representative Director. The agency was built around developing new talent and expanding the commercial scope of voice acting as a profession. The move placed him in a rare category – a top-tier performer also running the infrastructure behind the industry. Alongside his agency work, he has maintained an active music career under Pony Canyon, released several solo albums, and held live concerts. A YouTube channel launched in 2021 added another direct channel to his fanbase. In 2024, he publicly joined a volunteer group opposing the unauthorized use of AI-generated voices and images, advocating for voice actors’ rights at an industry level.
