Soul

Soul’s Journey & Character Arc in Phantom Blade Zero
The story kicks off with a wound that should have killed him. In a sword duel with Zuo Shang, once his blood brother, Soul takes a fatal strike to the heart, and only a mystic healer known as the Flesh Sculptor pulls him back from the edge. The fix is makeshift, though. The tainted heart keeps him alive for 66 days and not one day more, so every hour spent chasing answers is borrowed time.
That countdown shapes his entire arc. Soul sets out to restore his heart and unravel the conspiracy that condemned him, and the stakes are blunt: when the clock reaches zero, the run ends in permanent death. Director Soulframe Liang has described him as a classic xiake, a wandering martial hero in the Eastern tradition, and along the road he meets citizens in need of help. Zuo Shang, his former best friend, stands as the primary antagonist and gives the conspiracy a face that hurts to fight.
How Soul Fights in Phantom Blade Zero
Soul’s toolkit is built around speed and timing. He can unlock more than 30 primary weapons and 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges, carrying two of each at a time, and he can pick up techniques from defeated enemies along the way. Instead of a classic stamina bar, combat runs on a resource called Sha-Chi. Brutal attacks drain it heavily when blocked, while killer moves cannot be blocked or parried at all. Parry a brutal move or dodge a killer move right before it lands and a ghostep repositions Soul behind the enemy for a counter.
A skill tree rounds out the build, and skills can be refunded, so players are free to experiment with new weapons without getting stuck in a bad setup. The style is kungfupunk, a blend of wuxia swordplay with steampunk and horror touches, set in a world inspired by ancient China. Wayfarer mode keeps things story-focused for newcomers, while Hellwalker mode brings tougher AI and harder fights for veterans.
Soul’s Place in the World of Phantom Blade Zero
Soul’s story forms the main quest line, while side quests explore the stories of other characters and shape how everything ends. Depending on those outcomes, the main story lands on one of eight distinct endings. The adventure unfolds in a semi-open world of large handcrafted maps, a bleak martial arts underworld packed with rival factions, abominations, and plenty of people who want him dead. Phantom Blade Zero comes from developer S-Game and launches on October 29, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and PC.
Who Brings Soul to Life in Phantom Blade Zero?
Roger Craig Smith voices Soul in the English version, a casting confirmed by developer S-Game and reported by Game Informer after the voice was updated late in development. The Soul players control at launch is voiced entirely by Smith, and English and Chinese voice tracks are both available.
Smith is a name gamers know well. A former stand-up comedian who moved into voice acting full time in 2005, he began voicing Sonic the Hedgehog in 2010 and also plays Ezio Auditore da Firenze in Assassin’s Creed and Chris Redfield in Resident Evil. He voiced Batman in Batman: Arkham Origins, Captain America in several Marvel projects, Kyle Crane in Dying Light, and Mirage in Apex Legends. On television he voiced Thomas and more than 170 other characters in Regular Show, and his anime work includes Deidara in Naruto: Shippuden and Shinji Hirako in Bleach.
Jay Maksenuk and the Voice Actor Change for Soul
Smith was not the original voice of Soul. Jay Maksenuk originally voiced the protagonist in promotional trailers and pre-launch versions of the game before Smith took over the role. His performance can still be heard in several of those early trailers and gameplay videos. S-Game updated the voice during the review period, only days before release, and Game Informer noticed the switch while playing the game for its review.
Maksenuk’s other video game credits include Gideon in Love and Deepspace and V in Once Human.
On the performance side, Soul’s face and motion capture come from Yucheng, a Shanghai-based model. Donnie Yen, known for the Ip Man films, Rogue One, and John Wick: Chapter 4, provides facial and motion capture for Soul’s father Mó Yuan and has served as a creative consultant on the game’s combat since 2023.
