Jay Maksenuk’s Path Through a Decade of Game Localization

Few corners of the video game industry are harder to crack than English localization for global mobile titles. When Honor of Kings began building its English cast in 2015, Maksenuk was brought in to voice Li Bai – an assassin hero whose speed-driven playstyle demanded sharp, precise delivery. That early credit set the tone for what became a consistent decade-long run through some of the most actively played games in the world.

Lords Mobile followed in 2016, with Maksenuk voicing Chaos Dragon and Death Knight in one of the era’s most widely distributed strategy titles. These were not prestige projects – they were inside massively scaled mobile games reaching hundreds of millions of players. Convincing in those environments requires clarity and consistency over theatrical range.

X4: Foundations and the Indie Circuit

In 2018, Maksenuk joined Egosoft’s space simulation X4: Foundations, contributing various voices to a PC title known for player-driven economies and open-ended sandbox depth. Smaller projects – One Dreamer, Doomsday: Last Survivors, Dragonheir: Silent Gods, and Arena Breakout – kept him active across genres that rarely land in the same actor’s portfolio: indie narrative games, zombie strategy, survival sims, and extraction shooters.

From Once Human to Phantom Blade Zero

2024 brought two credits that shifted his trajectory. In Once Human, NetEase’s open-world survival title, Maksenuk voiced V inside a post-apocalyptic world that earned genuine player attention at launch. Simultaneously, he joined Love and Deepspace as Gideon, a significant role in Papergames’ otome title with an unusually devoted English-speaking fanbase.

Then came Phantom Blade Zero. One of the most anticipated action RPGs from Chinese developer S-GAME, the game cast Maksenuk as Soul a framed assassin racing against a 66-day death clock. He voiced the protagonist Soul in promotional trailers and pre-launch versions before Roger Craig Smith took over the role.
