Janelle Monae

Janelle Monáe’s Path from Kansas City to the Animation Booth
Long before Glory Reeves or Peg the dog, Janelle Monáe Robinson was building something that had little precedent: a music career framed entirely around a fictional android named Cindi Mayweather, a character she voiced, embodied, and performed across four studio albums. That world-building instinct the ability to inhabit a character completely through sound made her transition into voice acting less a pivot than a natural extension of what she had always done. Born December 1, 1985, in Kansas City, Kansas, Monáe signed to Bad Boy Records in 2007 and released her debut EP Metropolis: Suite I (The Chase) that same year. The ArchAndroid followed in 2010, cementing her as one of the most ambitious architects of concept-driven pop in the industry.
Rio 2 and the First Animation Credit
The animated booth came calling in 2014 when Blue Sky Studios cast Monáe as Dr. Monae in Rio 2, a winking self-referential role that let her ease into voice work on her own terms. She also co-wrote and performed “What Is Love” for the film’s soundtrack, taking home the Hollywood Film Award for Song of the Year for it. The role was brief but confirmed what collaborators already sensed: Monáe’s voice carried specific, textural qualities that translated cleanly to animation.
Disney+ and the UglyDolls Double Feature
2019 delivered two prominent voice credits in the same calendar year. In UglyDolls, the STX animated feature built around Kelly Clarkson’s music, Monáe voiced Mandy one of the “perfect” dolls inhabiting the Institute of Perfection. That same year, Disney+’s live-action/CG hybrid Lady and the Tramp gave her arguably the more memorable role: Peg, the wise-cracking Lhasa Apso Lady meets in the pound. Monáe also performed the musical number associated with Peg, reinforcing the through-line that runs across virtually every project she touches her voice work and her music work are rarely separable.
Human Resources and Adult Animation
Netflix’s Human Resources, the adult animated spinoff of Big Mouth, brought Monáe into a very different register. She voiced Claudia across the 2022 series, operating inside a show populated by Hormone Monsters, Depression Kitties, and Lovebug creatures navigating human emotional crises. The casting leaned into the darker, more comedic edge of her public persona, and the show’s writers-room pedigree gave the role more texture than a conventional animated part.
Bass X Machina and the 2026 Return to Animation
The most significant voice credit to date arrived in 2026. Bass X Machina, the Netflix adult animated steampunk series executive produced by Brian Tyree Henry and animated by Studio Mir, cast Monáe as Glory Reeves and she also performs the series’ opening song. The show, set in a supernatural vision of the Wild West, premiered November 3, 2026. It marks the first time Monáe has taken a recurring lead voice role in an animated series, and with original music composed by Roman GianArthur and Nate Wonder of Wondaland her own label’s creative circle the project feels like a deliberate convergence of every lane she has occupied simultaneously.
