Unshō Ishizuka and the Voice That Defined a Generation

Few sounds in anime carry as much immediate authority as the low, measured tone of Unshō Ishizuka. Born May 16, 1951, in Katsuyama, Fukui, he developed his passion for performance during his high school years and eventually worked through several theatrical organizations – including Shakespeare Theater and Dojinsha Production – before settling at Aoni Production, where he remained until his death. His formal entry into anime voice work came in 1984, and what followed was a career that stretched across nearly every genre the medium had to offer.

Pokémon, Professor Oak, and a Legacy in Every Episode

For millions of viewers worldwide, Ishizuka’s voice was the first they associated with the Pokémon franchise. He voiced both Professor Oak and the series narrator across decades of Pokémon anime, lending the franchise a scholarly warmth and narrative gravitas it might never have found elsewhere. His work on the series spanned the original run through Sun & Moon, and his pre-recorded narration was even featured posthumously in the 22nd Pokémon film. After his passing, archive audio was used to keep several of his smaller Pokémon roles alive.

Jet Black, Zabuza, and a Catalog Built on Depth

The breadth of Ishizuka’s anime catalog is staggering. As Jet Black in Cowboy Bebop, he gave the stoic ex-detective a weariness that felt lived-in. As Zabuza Momochi in Naruto, his delivery turned an early antagonist into one of the series’ most memorable figures. Van Hohenheim in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Kizaru in One Piece, and the older Joseph Joestar in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders all bore his unmistakable stamp. In Detective Conan, he voiced Inspector Ginzo Nakamori across hundreds of episodes.

Games, Dubbing, and the Weight of Succession

Outside anime, Ishizuka made a significant mark on video games and foreign-language dubbing. He took over the role of Heihachi Mishima in the Tekken series beginning with Tekken Tag Tournament 2, and inherited the role of Mr. Satan in the Dragon Ball franchise – both following the death of veteran seiyuu Daisuke Gori in 2010. In games, he also voiced Senator Armstrong in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and Ryotaro Dojima in Persona 4. As a dubbing actor, his voice stood in for Liam Neeson, Laurence Fishburne, and Kevin Spacey across numerous Hollywood productions.

A Career Finished With Extraordinary Dedication

Diagnosed with esophageal cancer, Ishizuka continued recording through his illness – a commitment that resulted in his work appearing in productions that aired well after his condition became serious. He died on August 13, 2018, at 67, with his final recordings reaching screens months after his passing. Across a career that produced hundreds of credited roles, he remained at Aoni Production and left behind a catalog that continues to define what authoritative presence in Japanese animation can sound like.
