Kalamazoo, Michigan put her on the map, but UCLA's anime club scene pointed her toward the recording booth. Stephanie Sheh spent two decades voicing emotionally layered anime leads before branching into games, animation, and ADR direction. Best known for Hinata Hyuga in Naruto, Orihime Inoue in Bleach, and Usagi Tsukino in Sailor Moon, she also directs dubs for studios nationwide.

Stephanie Sheh’s Rise Through American Anime Dubbing

A Daily Bruin film critic turned dub producer, Stephanie Sheh slid into the recording booth almost by accident. After graduating from UCLA in 1999, she took a producing job at Synch-Point to pay rent while chasing acting work on the side. Credited under the pseudonym Jennifer Sekiguchi, she voiced Silky in I’m Gonna Be An Angel! and landed a breakout part as Mamimi Samejima in FLCL the following year. Training at Second City, East West Players, and the Susan Blu Voiceover Workshop sharpened a range that would carry her through two decades of dubbing work.

Naruto, Bleach, and the Cartoon Network Generation

Hinata Hyuga gave Sheh her first widely recognized role, a quiet character she has described as relatable for her self-esteem arc within Naruto. Around the same period she took on Orihime Inoue in Bleach, balancing a comedic, almost ditzy surface against real emotional weight, a contrast the English production specifically asked her to find. Eureka in Eureka Seven and Mikuru Asahina in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya followed in quick succession, cementing her as a fixture of Cartoon Network’s Toonami-era anime block.

Sailor Moon and a Career-Defining Reprisal

In 2014, Viz Media handed Sheh the title role for its redub of Sailor Moon, casting her as Usagi Tsukino opposite the original 1990s English version most fans grew up with. The part turned into one of her most public associations, carried forward into Sailor Moon Crystal and convention appearances built almost entirely around the character.

Tharja, Mikan, and a Parallel Career in Games

Video games opened a second front for Sheh’s career, starting with motion capture work as Cereza in Bayonetta after a trip to Japan for the shoot. Tharja in Fire Emblem: Awakening became a fan favorite, while Mikan Tsumiki in the Danganronpa series and Rebecca Chambers in the Resident Evil franchise kept her in rotation across multiple console generations. Behind the mic, she also directed voice work for Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles, and Castlevania: Judgment.

Beyond the Booth

Sheh writes ADR and subtitle scripts in addition to acting, work that draws on her Mandarin and Taiwanese Hokkien fluency from childhood years spent in Taiwan. In 2011, she organized the fundraising group We Heart Japan after the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, channeling the anime community’s goodwill toward disaster relief.
