Risa Mei’s Path from Stage Performer to Anime and Game Dubbing

Long before she became one of the more recognizable voices in English-dubbed anime and gacha games, Risa Mei was logging hours onstage, in motion capture suits, and behind microphones across multiple creative disciplines. Born in California to Chinese and Indonesian parents, she started performing at age seven – singing, dancing, and eventually leading a punk rock band called Psycho Bando through the Southern California circuit. After graduating with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance, she co-created 4TE, a Japanese electronic pop group she developed while performing at Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, where her stage credits included The One Piece Premiere Show and Amazing Sesame Street.

Her entry into recorded voice work came in 2019, when the Jim Henson Company cast her as the motion capture performer and voice actress for Tilly the Tortoise in the Netflix children’s series Word Party. That role established the model for how Mei works – physical and vocal performance often running in parallel. Early dubbing credits followed in 2020, initially recorded remotely in Dallas before her work shifted to Los Angeles in 2022 as her presence in the dubbing community grew.

Genshin Impact and the Role That Expanded Her Reach

The casting that brought Risa Mei to a much wider audience was Sangonomiya Kokomi in Genshin Impact – a healer and leader of the Watatsumi Army whose measured, composed delivery suited Mei’s controlled vocal approach. Genshin’s global scale means the role carries significant weight, and Kokomi remains the credit most associated with Mei’s name across gaming communities. She followed that with Lynx in Honkai: Star Rail and multiple roles across Zenless Zone Zero, deepening her foothold in the HoYoverse game catalog. For the Sand Land video game adaptation of Akira Toriyama’s manga, she voiced Beelzebub, adding a title with distinct legacy appeal to her credits.

My Dress-Up Darling and the Anime Breakout

On the anime side, Sajuna Inui in My Dress-Up Darling gave Mei a character with comedic range and emotional texture – a cosplayer whose bluster conceals genuine vulnerability. The role returned for the second season, confirming her place in one of the more closely followed dubbed anime productions of recent years. Other notable anime dub work includes Kaoru Kamiya in the 2022 Rurouni Kenshin remake, Futaba Igarashi in My Senpai Is Annoying, May Chang in the live-action Fullmetal Alchemist films, and Nanaki in Heavenly Delusion. Across productions handled at Crunchyroll/Funimation, Bang Zoom! Entertainment, and VSI Los Angeles, she has moved consistently through both recurring and supporting roles.

A Performer Defined by Range Across Formats

What makes Risa Mei’s career trajectory distinct is the number of formats running concurrently. Motion capture, suit performance, stage production, singing, and dubbing are not sequential chapters in her career but overlapping tracks she has maintained throughout. Represented for voiceover by Atlas Talent, she has continued adding credits through 2025 and into 2026, with appearances in Blue Box, Medalist, Code Geass: Roze of the Recapture, Dandelion, and Rooster Fighter among her more recent work. The breadth reflects both industry demand and a performer who came to voice acting from an unusually wide performing background.
