Quinta Brunson’s Animated Side: From Lazor Wulf to Zootopia 2

West Philadelphia shaped Quinta Brunson long before Hollywood did. Born December 21, 1989, in the Cobbs Creek neighborhood, she grew up the youngest of five children her name literally means “fifth” in Spanish with a kindergarten teacher for a mother and an appetite for comedy that she began feeding through improv classes at her high school. After a brief stint at Temple University, she moved to Los Angeles in 2013 to chase a career in entertainment.

The breakthrough came fast and from an unexpected direction. A 2014 Instagram series called “The Girl Who’s Never Been on a Nice Date” went viral and landed her a producing relationship with BuzzFeed Motion Pictures, where she built a digital audience in the tens of millions. The web series Broke (2016) on YouTube Red earned her a Streamy Award nomination for Best Acting in a Comedy, and her Facebook Watch series Quinta vs. Everything expanded her reach further. These weren’t just content exercises they were proof that Brunson could carry a creative project from concept to execution entirely on her own terms.

Voice Work: Animation Credits Across Adult and Family Fare

Parallel to her live-action career, Brunson accumulated a string of animation credits that span the full tonal range of the medium. Her first major voice work came on Adult Swim’s Lazor Wulf (2019-2021), where she voiced multiple characters including Blazor Wulf a project she also contributed to as a staff writer, making her involvement creative rather than just performative. That same year she appeared in Netflix’s Big Mouth, returning to the show across four episodes through 2021, voicing a version of herself alongside the show’s hormone-monster chaos.

In 2020, Syfy’s anime-influenced Magical Girl Friendship Squad gave her a lead voice role as Alex, one of two women who discover magical powers while struggling to make rent a comic premise that fit Brunson’s natural register. The Disney+ short form series Cars on the Road (2022) added Ivy to her credits, and a 2023 guest appearance on Harley Quinn put her behind the microphone as Hawkgirl.

Zootopia 2 and Dr. Fuzzby

The highest profile animation credit of Brunson’s career arrived with Disney’s Zootopia 2 (November 2025), where she voices Dr. Fuzzby a quokka therapist who runs a “Partners in Crisis” counseling program for Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde. The role sits at the heart of the sequel’s setup: Fuzzby is the character who exposes the detectives’ frayed partnership and pushes them toward the case that drives the film. The casting fits a pattern of the franchise choosing leads whose comedic timing anchors emotional beats, and Brunson’s work on Abbott Elementary had already demonstrated that particular skill in abundance.

Abbott Elementary and the Emmy Milestones

The live action side of Brunson’s career dwarfs the animation work in scale and recognition. Abbott Elementary, which premiered on ABC in December 2021, became one of the defining comedy series of the decade. Brunson created, wrote, executive produced, and starred in it as Janine Teagues, an idealistic second grade teacher at a chronically underfunded Philadelphia public school. The show drew from her mother’s 40-year career in kindergarten classrooms and named its fictional school after a real teacher from her childhood.

At the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2022, she became the first Black woman to receive three simultaneous nominations in comedy categories writing, lead actress, and series. She won for writing that year. At the 75th ceremony in 2023, she took home Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, becoming the first Black woman to win that category in over 40 years. In June 2026, she signed a five year deal with 20th Television, and announced plans to develop and star in a Betty Boop film.
