Mick Lauer’s Path From Newgrounds to Professional Voice Acting

A half-Taiwanese, half-Irish kid from Woodinville, Washington who spent his formative years moving across Taiwan and various Asian countries – that background gave Mick Lauer a cultural fluency that would quietly inform his entire creative output. His first language was Mandarin Chinese, not English, and that early immersion abroad shaped both his artistic sensibility and his instinct for character. After returning to the United States, he went on to graduate from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, stacking his training further at the Atlantic Theater Company, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, StoneStreet Studio, and UCB’s improv program in New York before studying voice specifically under Jay Snyder at Edge Studio. Represented by Dean Panaro Talent, he operates out of Los Angeles and works with studios including Bang Zoom! Entertainment and Studiopolis.

Long before landing professional dubbing credits, Lauer built a significant following on Newgrounds under the handle RicePirate. His parody animations – particularly “Dot Dot Dot” – established him as a fixture in the early internet animation scene alongside figures like StamperTV, OneyNG, and Psychicpebbles. That grassroots reputation, rooted in genuine craft rather than industry access, positioned him as a bridge between the independent animation world and the professional dubbing pipeline.

Leone Abbacchio, Yoriichi Tsugikuni, and the Anime Credits That Defined His Range

Two roles in particular anchored Lauer’s standing in the English dubbing world. His performance as Leone Abbacchio in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind captured the character’s particular brand of corrosive cynicism and buried grief – a difficult emotional register that required more than surface-level brooding. Lauer was a self-identified JoJo fan since childhood, having read the manga in Chinese while living in Taipei, which meant the role carried personal weight beyond a standard casting assignment.

Yoriichi Tsugikuni in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba presented the opposite challenge: a character defined by quiet gravity and almost mythic restraint. In Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, he voiced both Tenjiro Kirinji and Ludaas Friegen. Makoto Shishio in Rurouni Kenshin (2023), Shuro in Delicious in Dungeon, Marrow Amin in RWBY, and Bonchien Nicoli La Tasty Peach Uralis in To Your Eternity add further texture to a catalog built on characters who sit well outside the conventional hero mold. Lauer’s game credits run deep. Ghost of Tsushima, Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, Silent Hill f, Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion, and Anonymous;Code all carry his voice across a wide range of roles. His relationship with the Markiplier creative universe is particularly notable – he appeared as Abe the Detective and Wilford Motherloving Warfstache in Who Killed Markiplier?, Mr. Murder-Slaughter in A Heist With Markiplier, and Gunther B.
