Kumail Nanjiani’s Path From Karachi to Hollywood’s Animation Roster
Growing up in Karachi, Pakistan, Kumail Nanjiani moved to the United States for college, enrolling at Grinnell College in Iowa where he studied computer science and philosophy. Stand-up comedy took hold of him during those years, and after graduating in 2001, he relocated to Chicago to pursue it seriously. The podcast circuit became his early training ground he co-hosted the video game podcast “The Indoor Kids,” a natural fit for someone who had been a committed gamer most of his life. That gaming background would eventually connect to a notable voice credit: in 2015, he voiced Mshak Moradi in the “Hunt the Truth” audio drama tied to Halo 5: Guardians, one of the more unusual paths into voice work for any actor.
Prismo, Pawny, and the Animated Roles That Defined His Voice Career
Animation found Nanjiani gradually, not all at once. His recurring role as Prismo on Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time a cosmic wish-granting entity who lives outside of time became one of his most enduring voice credits, a part he reprised in Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake in 2023. Guest spots followed in shows like Bob’s Burgers, Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and Bless the Harts, building out a voice resume that ran parallel to his growing live-action profile. In 2019, he gave voice to Pawny in Men in Black: International a small, loyal alien who attaches himself to Agent M a performance that leaned into the same dry comic rhythm he had honed on stage. He also voiced Plimpton the ostrich in Dolittle that same year.
Migration and Leading an Animated Feature
Illumination’s Migration (2023) marked a step up in animated prominence: Nanjiani led the film as Mack Mallard, an overprotective mallard father reluctantly shepherding his family from a New England pond to Jamaica. The character’s combination of anxiety, warmth, and stubborn caution fit squarely in his wheelhouse as a performer. The film also featured Elizabeth Banks, Keegan-Michael Key, and Danny DeVito, and performed solidly at the global box office during the holiday season. For Nanjiani, the role extended a voice acting thread that had been running quietly alongside his more visible screen career for over a decade.
Silicon Valley, The Big Sick, and the Live-Action Foundation
The engine behind Nanjiani’s overall career was his six-season run as Dinesh Chugtai on HBO’s Silicon Valley (2014-2019), a role that introduced him to a mainstream audience. Before that, his semi-autobiographical romantic comedy The Big Sick (2017), co-written with his wife Emily V. Gordon, earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay and positioned him as a serious writer-performer. His role as Kingo in Marvel’s Eternals (2021), a Bollywood star with powers he cannot use on camera, brought him to the franchise blockbuster level. More recently, he played Xander Harkness in the Amazon series Fallout (2024) and starred in Welcome to Chippendales as the real-life figure Somen “Steve” Banerjee.
