Kayli Mills’ Path from Michigan Cover Artist to Anime Powerhouse

Long before landing major dub roles, Kayli Mills was a kid who moved across Michigan over a dozen times, unable to join local theater or build roots in any one place. That restlessness pushed her online. In middle school, she found community in anime song covers and amateur voice work, eventually launching a YouTube channel under the name “MewKiyoko” in 2008. What started as a hobby became a roadmap. Mills later spent three months in Otsu, Japan, working aboard a cruise ship, then six months in Sydney, Australia, busking with a guitar between classes – the kind of hands-on, globe-crossing formation that built range before a single studio session.

Re:Zero, Sword Art Online, and the Emotional Core of a Character

The role that put Mills on the broader anime radar was Emilia in Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World, a half-elf heroine whose warmth and self-doubt required careful, layered delivery across multiple seasons. The performance held together a character who could easily tip into melodrama, and it held. Around the same time, Mills took on Alice Zuberg in Sword Art Online: Alicization – a former Integrity Knight stripped of her identity and rebuilt from scratch. The emotional arc across that series demanded consistency over dozens of episodes, and Mills delivered it without the performance cracking under the weight of the character’s shifts.

Genshin Impact, NIKKE, and the Game Credits That Expanded Her Reach

The move into video games widened the audience considerably. As Keqing in Genshin Impact, Mills voiced one of the game’s most type-A overachievers – electric, precise, slightly insufferable, and entirely compelling. In Goddess of Victory: NIKKE, she plays Rapi, a combat android whose cold exterior layers over something more human. Both are roles built on controlled contradiction, and Mills has made that tension a specialty. The Final Fantasy VII franchise brought a different challenge: stepping into Cissnei for Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, taking over a beloved character with an established history while making the performance feel earned rather than imitative.

Clara Valac and the Art of Chaotic Energy

Somewhere between the dramatic leads and the stoic combatants sits Valac Clara from Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun – a hyperdrive demon child with approximately zero filters and an enormous heart. Mills voices not only Clara but the entire Valac family across multiple episodes, each with distinct vocal signatures. The performance is technically demanding in ways that get underestimated: sustaining that level of controlled chaos across a long-running series without the character becoming grating is harder than it looks.
