By the time high school ended in 2004, Grelle had already begun stepping into recording booths, earning credits at ADV Films before the studio shuttered and moving on to Funimation Entertainment, Seraphim Digital/Sentai Filmworks, and OkraTron 5000. Formerly credited under the name Josh Grelle, they publicly came out as transgender in March 2023, adopting the name Jessie James Grelle and using they/she pronouns.

Armin Arlert and the Attack on Titan Years

No single role defines Grelle’s reach like Armin Arlert in Attack on Titan. Across more than a decade of the franchise’s run, the performance demanded an extraordinary tonal range – from frightened teenager to strategic genius – and Grelle delivered it in ways that earned consistent praise from English-dub audiences. When the final episodes aired on Toonami, Grelle described the experience as recording lines for one of animation’s most iconic characters for the last time, a milestone that resonated visibly across their social media.
