Jessie James Grelle

Jessie James Grelle’s Two Decades at the Heart of Anime Dubbing
Stage lights found Jessie James Grelle early – community theater in Clifton, Texas starting at age five laid the groundwork for a career that would eventually reach millions of fans worldwide. By the time high school ended in 2004, Grelle had already begun stepping into recording booths, earning credits at ADV Films before the studio shuttered and moving on to Funimation Entertainment, Seraphim Digital/Sentai Filmworks, and OkraTron 5000. Formerly credited under the name Josh Grelle, they publicly came out as transgender in March 2023, adopting the name Jessie James Grelle and using they/she pronouns.
Armin Arlert and the Attack on Titan Years
No single role defines Grelle’s reach like Armin Arlert in Attack on Titan. Across more than a decade of the franchise’s run, the performance demanded an extraordinary tonal range – from frightened teenager to strategic genius – and Grelle delivered it in ways that earned consistent praise from English-dub audiences. When the final episodes aired on Toonami, Grelle described the experience as recording lines for one of animation’s most iconic characters for the last time, a milestone that resonated visibly across their social media.
Devil Kings, Ice Rinks, and an Expansive Roster
Outside that landmark series, the depth of Grelle’s catalog becomes apparent quickly. As Sadao Maou – the Demon King Satan reduced to working fast food – in The Devil Is a Part-Timer!, they found the comedic timing the role required without sacrificing the underlying menace. Yuri Katsuki in Yuri!!! on Ice demanded something different again: emotional fragility, self-doubt, and a journey toward confidence played entirely through the body of a figure skater. Fumikage Tokoyami in My Hero Academia, Nobuchika Ginoza in Psycho-Pass, Futaro Uesugi in The Quintessential Quintuplets, and Shido Itsuka in the Date A Live series further demonstrate how consistently studios returned to Grelle for lead protagonist work across wildly different genres.
Script Work and the Craft Behind the Booth
Grelle’s contribution to English-language anime extends beyond performance. Their work as an ADR script writer – adapting Japanese dialogue to land naturally in English while preserving narrative intent – represents a distinct and demanding skill set that shapes how entire series feel to Western audiences. That dual role as both performer and writer gives Grelle an unusually complete view of the dubbing process from text to finished recording.
The Mimcubus Chapter
In January 2024, Grelle revealed themselves as Mimcubus, an independent VTuber who had been streaming in relative anonymity for over two years. The announcement marked a significant expansion of their public presence, connecting an already large anime fanbase with a growing streaming community and signaling a new creative direction alongside their ongoing voice work.
