Heather Masters and the Voice That Defined a Horror Franchise

Few video game characters have lodged themselves into a fanbase’s consciousness the way Circus Baby did – and that effect was almost entirely the result of casting. When Five Nights at Freddy’s creator Scott Cawthon went looking for someone to voice Baby in 2016, he reached out directly to Heather Masters, an Alaskan actress who had spent years narrating audiobooks and doing commercial work. She nearly turned the job down, convinced the unsolicited contact was a scam. Once she committed to the role, Masters shaped a voice that balanced childhood innocence with something genuinely unsettling – drawn, she said, from memories of pretending to be the Empress from The Neverending Story.

From Sister Location to Secret of the Mimic

Masters returned to the Five Nights at Freddy’s universe across nearly every major release that followed. Circus Baby reappeared in Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Simulator as the corrupted Scrap Baby, then again in Ultimate Custom Night, Help Wanted, Special Delivery, and Help Wanted 2. Security Breach in 2021 expanded her presence considerably, adding Vanessa – the game’s central human antagonist – and Glamrock Chica to her roster. Her final credited work came with Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic in 2025, where she voiced Nurse Dollie and the Stage Manager before stepping away from the industry entirely.

A Career Beyond the Fazbear Universe

The FNaF franchise was the public-facing peak of a career that ran much deeper. Masters had voiced Spider-Gwen in the mobile game Marvel Avengers Academy, logged credits across indie titles including The Wardrobe and The Sorrowvirus, and narrated more than 25 audiobooks. Commercial clients included the American Heart Association, Whole Foods, and Lenovo. A graduate of Nancy Wolfson’s Braintracks Audio program, she brought formal training to a largely freelance career operated from Alaska, where she and her family have lived throughout. In October 2025, she announced her retirement from voice acting to pursue nursing full-time – a goal she had been working toward for several years alongside her recording work.
