Derek Hagen

Raised in Greater Sudbury, Ontario, and now based in the UK, Derek Hagen has built a career at the intersection of stage performance and digital character work. Best known for Frederick Langston in Control, Jesse Rentier in Evil West, and Orson Mills in HITMAN 2.

Derek Hagen’s Journey Through the World of AAA Game Storytelling

From the stages of UK theater to the recording booths of some of gaming’s most atmospheric franchises, the career of this Canadian-born actor represents a steady climb through increasingly demanding projects. Born December 18, 1977, in Greater Sudbury, Ontario, Derek Hagen relocated to the United Kingdom and built a dual career spanning live performance and digital performance work – voice acting paired with motion capture.

Control and the Role That Defined a Career Milestone

Remedy Entertainment’s 2019 psychological thriller Control gave Hagen one of his most significant named roles: Frederick Langston, a key figure within the Federal Bureau of Control. The performance required grounding an unusual, surreal narrative in credible human behavior – a task well-suited to a stage-trained actor. Langston appears throughout the game’s story in video logs and direct scenes, making the role far more than a background credit.

The Hitman Series and a String of Memorable Targets

Across the World of Assassination trilogy, Hagen voiced multiple targets and supporting figures. In HITMAN 2, his credits include Orson Mills, Ajit “AJ” Krish, Blair Reddington, and The Censor. HITMAN 3 added Hans Lucht, Jack Roe, Montgomery, and Richard Voltaire to the list – an unusually dense contribution to a single franchise. The variety within those credits, from corrupt businessmen to operatives, reflects his range as a character voice artist.

Ghost Recon and Evil West – Expanding the Portfolio

Midas became another recognizable name attached to Hagen across both Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands (2017) and Ghost Recon: Breakpoint (2020), giving the character continuity across two major releases. Evil West (2022) brought the most prominent protagonist credit of his career: Jesse Rentier, the player character in Focus Entertainment’s supernatural western action game – a full lead performance requiring both voiceover and motion capture work.
