Video Game: Death Stranding

Sam Porter Bridges spends most of Death Stranding alone on the road, hauling cargo across a shattered America that he barely trusts himself to reconnect. Withdrawn and guarded after years of personal loss, he carries the weight of a fractured country quite literally on his back, one delivery at a time.

Sam’s Story Role

Working as a freelance porter for the organization called Bridges, Sam gets pulled back into a mission he wanted no part of after his estranged mother, UCA President Bridget Strand, asks him to help reconnect the splintered nation through the Chiral Network. His aphenphosmphobia makes him recoil from physical contact, a trait that defines how he interacts with nearly everyone around him. As a Repatriate, dying does not end his story, since his consciousness can return from a liminal space known as the Seam. Carrying a Bridge Baby to detect deadly BTs along his route, Sam treats every delivery as both a literal and emotional act of rebuilding connections he has spent years avoiding.

Who Voices Sam in Death Stranding?

Norman Reedus provides Sam’s English voice, motion capture, and likeness, building on his collaboration with director Hideo Kojima that began with the cancelled horror project P.T. Reedus is widely known for playing Daryl Dixon across The Walking Dead franchise. In the Japanese version, Kenjiro Tsuda voices Sam, an actor recognized for his work as Seto Kaiba in the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise and Kento Nanami in Jujutsu Kaisen.
