Tobias Smith / Deadman

Deadman’s Place Among the Jackdaw’s Crew
The nickname says something. Not a boast, not a war cry, just a quiet admission from a man who has already made his peace with the worst. Deadman is introduced through sources as a tortured soul who signs on with Kenway not out of loyalty or ambition, but because sailing under the black flag beats the alternative of doing nothing at all with whatever time he has left. That resignation makes him stand apart from Resynced’s other new officers, Lucy Baldwin and the Padre, both of whom carry more conventional arcs of redemption or purpose. Deadman’s is bleaker. Bleaker, and arguably more interesting for it. His questline, which becomes available only after completing Sequence 11, peels back his backstory across several missions and culminates in the quest “Very Little, But Something,” a title that reads almost like a personal motto.
What Deadman Brings to the Jackdaw
Whatever weight Deadman carries emotionally, he more than earns his berth through sheer firepower. Recruiting him as Master Gunner grants the Jackdaw the Extra Salvo upgrade, doubling the damage output of the broadside cannons by firing two volleys in rapid succession, a game-altering boost for players who have invested heavily in naval combat. Completing his full questline adds a second reward on top: Deadman’s Cohort Mortar, a tighter, more precise alternative fire mode for the ship’s mortar that trades wide saturation for a focused stream of bombs. Among all five officers available in Resynced, Deadman represents the single largest offensive upgrade to the Jackdaw, making the effort of reaching him post-story well worth the investment.
