Frozen solid inside an ancient iceberg for who knows how long, Phillips gets a rude awakening when Goomi shows up promising Hollywood stardom. That so-called audition turns out to be a trap, pulling this half-shark monster straight into a much darker plot to unleash chaos on the world.

Phillips’s Role in the Story

Alongside fellow ice-bound monster Howard, Phillips gets thawed out by Goomi under the guise of joining James and Henry’s monster movie production. Instead, once filming starts, he and Howard turn on the Minions and snatch Henry to use as a sacrifice for summoning the destructive creature Irene. His name is a deliberate piece of wordplay too: paired with Howard, it spells out Howard Phillips, a nod to horror author H.P. Lovecraft, whose influence shapes the film’s entire creature-feature stretch. Menacing as he seems on the surface, Phillips ultimately serves Goomi’s larger scheme rather than one of his own.

Who Voices Phillips in Minions & Monsters?

Bobby Moynihan lends his voice to Phillips, bringing timing sharpened during his years as a Saturday Night Live cast member from 2008 to 2017. Moynihan has also voiced characters in The Secret Life of Pets and currently stars in the NBC comedy series The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins.
