Howard

Long before he cracks open a spellbook or claims a single starring credit, Howard spends decades locked in ice, waiting for someone foolish enough to dig him out. That someone turns out to be a tiny green creature with big plans and even bigger secrets.

Howard’s Role in the Story

Howard is one half of a pair of ancient sea monsters, discovered frozen solid inside a remote fortress by Goomi, who presents him and his fellow captive Phillips as perfect movie monster material for an aspiring Minion filmmaker’s passion project. That pitch turns out to be a cover story. Goomi actually intends to use the pair to help summon Irene, a massive, eyeball-covered horror bent on wiping out the planet. Howard leans into the deception, going so far as to kidnap one of the Minions and use him as bait to get the summoning ritual underway. Visually, he splits the difference between a cartoon starfish and a tentacled deep-sea creature, giving him an unsettling look that fits his role as a monster playing dress-up as a friend.

Who Voices Howard in Minions & Monsters?

Phil LaMarr provides Howard’s English-language voice, bringing decades of animation experience to the role. LaMarr is widely recognized as the voice of Samurai Jack in the Cartoon Network series of the same name and as Hermes Conrad on Futurama, alongside a memorable live-action turn as Marvin in Pulp Fiction. In the Japanese dub, Howard is voiced by Terai, one half of the comedy duo Battlerys, marking a notable casting choice for the franchise’s Japanese-language release.
