JB Blanc’s Journey from the Yorkshire Moors to Los Angeles

Born in Paris on February 13, 1969, to an English mother and a French father, Jean-Benoit “JB” Blanc spent his formative years in an unusual cultural limbo – a French-speaking child planted in rural North Yorkshire, bullied for his accent and his looks. That alienation pushed him toward music and theatre, eventually landing him an audition for the National Youth Theatre at 16. In 1987, at just 18, he became the youngest person accepted that year into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), graduating in 1990. What followed was over 15 years in British theatre, including three seasons at the Royal National Theatre working with directors Howard Davies and Sir Peter Hall.

The pivot to Hollywood came via a seafaring rogue. His acclaimed portrayal of Luigi Vampa in the 2002 film The Count of Monte Cristo opened doors in Los Angeles, where Blanc relocated and built a parallel career in live-action television – racking up appearances in Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Barry, Shameless, Prison Break, and more than 30 US television productions. The French kid from Yorkshire had become a fixture on American screens.

Vander, Caustic, and the Arcane Legacy

Few voice performances in recent animated television hit as hard as Vander in Arcane, the Netflix series based on the League of Legends universe. Blanc brought weight and fatherly authority to Vander – adoptive protector of Vi and Powder – and then returned for Season 2 as the transformed antagonist Warwick, a performance requiring an entirely different register. The dual role in a single franchise demonstrated exactly the kind of range that major studios search for. The series received universal acclaim, and the voice cast, Blanc among them, was cited in The Art and Making of Arcane as having been selected specifically for their ability to make characters feel real rather than merely sound impressive.

In the battle royale space, Blanc has been the voice of Caustic in Apex Legends since the character’s debut in 2019 – the cold, scientific malice of the gas-trap legend delivered with a precision that made Caustic one of the game’s most recognizable voices. The character has remained in continuous rotation across multiple seasons, cementing Blanc as a long-term presence in that franchise.

400 Characters and a Director’s Eye

The sheer scope of Blanc’s game credits defies easy summary: over 400 characters across more than 200 titles. Rost in Horizon Zero Dawn – the quiet, tragic father-figure whose early sacrifice anchors an entire game’s emotional arc – stands among his most affecting work. Bane in Batman: Arkham Origins, Kano in Mortal Kombat 11, Kuben Blisk in Titanfall, Braum in League of Legends, Ryotaro Dojima in Persona 4, and multiple entries in the Call of Duty, Final Fantasy, Uncharted, and Diablo franchises round out a body of game work that stretches across nearly every major publisher. His most recent confirmed credits include roles in Avowed (2025), Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 (2024), and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (2024).

Alongside performance work, Blanc established himself as a voice director for some of the biggest titles in the industry – Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Middle-earth: Shadow of War, Overwatch, Fortnite, Mafia III, XCOM 2, multiple World of Warcraft expansions, Hearthstone, and Call of Duty: Vanguard, where he served as both performance capture director and voiceover director. In 2023, the Society of Voice Arts and Sciences awarded him a Voice Arts Award for Outstanding Video Game Character for his work in Harry Potter: Magic Awakened.

Anime Dubbing and the New Generation Pictures Era

Before Apex Legends or Arcane, Blanc built a significant reputation in anime dubbing through New Generation Pictures. His title role as Rowe Rickenbacker in L/R: Licensed by Royalty earned him a Performance of the Year Award from the Anime Dub Recognition Awards in 2004, the same year he picked up an Actor of the Month award for taking over Joe “Joker” Carpenter in R.O.D the TV. He voiced Enrico Maxwell across both the original Hellsing series and Hellsing Ultimate, Sajin Komamura across hundreds of Bleach episodes, and Pakkun – Kakashi’s ninken dog – throughout Naruto: Shippuden. The anime work gave him an early foothold with a dedicated fan community that would follow his career long after those dubs wrapped.
