Tetsuo Kanao’s Path From the Stage to the Microphone

A commerce graduate of Keio University, Tetsuo Kanao (金尾哲夫) arrived at acting through conviction rather than convention. After graduating, he rejected the corporate track and joined Theatre Company Subaru, a decision that anchored the next four-plus decades of his career. Stage work gave him the technical foundation that would later define his voice acting: precise diction, physical control, and the ability to inhabit antagonists with depth rather than caricature. By the early 1980s, he had begun branching into dubbing and anime, riding the wave of demand for theatre-trained talent in Japan’s expanding audio production industry.

Evolto and the Kamen Rider Build Breakthrough

For much of his career, Kanao occupied the background of larger productions – a character actor trusted with supporting roles across anime, games, and dubbing. That changed with Kamen Rider Build (2017-2018), where he voiced Evolto, the series’ primary villain. An alien entity from the Blood Tribe who manipulates humanity under the alias Blood Stalk before revealing himself as Kamen Rider Evol, Evolto demanded a layered, charismatic menace that Kanao delivered across the full television run, related specials, and sequel productions including Build NEW WORLD: Kamen Rider Cross-Z. The role made his name recognizable outside dedicated tokusatsu circles and marked his first true lead-scale performance after decades of supporting work.

Sekiro, Yakuza, and the Game Voice Credits

Kanao’s video game output runs deep. His most widely heard game performance is Isshin Ashina in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (2019), the aged but ferocious sword saint whose combat gravitas demanded a voice that could carry both frailty and lethal authority. He also brought gruff presence to Ryuhei Hoshino in Yakuza: Like a Dragon (2020) and Shusaku Chiba in Rise of the Ronin (2024), extending his track record in FromSoftware and action-RPG releases. Earlier, he voiced Sark in Kingdom Hearts II (2005) and Zangief in Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie (1994), the latter marking one of his earliest major franchise voice credits.

Anime, Dubbing, and a Career Built Across Formats

The breadth of Kanao’s work spans formats that most seiyuu never touch simultaneously. On the anime side, he played Chad Adkins in Gangsta. (2015), Vim Jeturk across Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury (2022-2023), Bui in Yu Yu Hakusho, and recurred through the Dr. Stone franchise across its original run and Stone Wars. His dubbing work reaches into Western prestige television and cinema – Tywin Lannister in the Japanese dub of Game of Thrones, Rupert Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Alfred Pennyworth in Batman v Superman. He also dubbed Chancellor Valorum in Star Wars Episode I and Dr. Kirk Langstrom in Batman: The Animated Series, constructing a body of work that covers nearly every corner of Japanese audio production.
