Yūma Uchida

Yūma Uchida voice actor profile
Birth Date: 12/09/1992

Tokyo-born seiyuu Yūma Uchida debuted in 2012 while still attending voice acting school, landing his first lead in Gundam Build Fighters Try just two years later. Best known for Megumi Fushiguro in Jujutsu Kaisen, Ash Lynx in Banana Fish, and Kyo Sohma in Fruits Basket, he has won the 11th Seiyu Awards Best Newcomer and 13th Best Male Lead Actor.

Yūma Uchida and the Making of a Modern Seiyuu

The name Yūma Uchida (内田雄馬) carries serious weight in contemporary anime. Born September 21, 1992, in Tokyo, he grew up watching his older sister Maaya Uchida build her own career as a seiyuu, a path that eventually drew him in as well. At thirteen, the video game Sakura Wars sparked his interest in voice acting. He enrolled at the Japan Narration Acting Institute at seventeen, making his first credited anime appearance in the Holy Knight OVA in 2012 – while he was still a student. He graduated and joined the agency I’m Enterprise in April 2013, later moving to Intention in January 2023.

That trajectory from training room to title role happened fast. By 2014, Uchida had secured his first lead as Yuuma Kousaka in Gundam Build Fighters Try, a mecha series that ran into 2015 and spawned multiple follow-up projects in which he reprised the role. What made that casting meaningful was not just the opportunity – it was the range of work surrounding it. During those same formative years, he picked up roles across Blood Blockade Battlefront, The Asterisk War, Macross Delta, and Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, establishing a footprint in action and sci-fi before he was widely known.

Banana Fish, Fruits Basket, and Award Recognition

Two roles in particular shifted his standing in the industry. Ash Lynx in Banana Fish (2018) demanded emotional depth and maturity that surprised even longtime fans of the source material; Uchida’s performance anchored a story dealing with trauma, violence, and loyalty with precision and control. A year later, Kyo Sohma in the 2019 Fruits Basket reboot required something different – raw vulnerability beneath a defensive exterior. That combination put him on the Seiyu Awards radar. He had already won Best Male Newcomer at the 11th ceremony in 2017; the 13th awards in 2019 brought him Best Male Lead Actor. Those two wins, spread two years apart, mark one of the cleaner award arcs in recent seiyuu history.

Megumi Fushiguro and the Jujutsu Kaisen Era

The role that brought Uchida to the widest global audience arrived with Jujutsu Kaisen in 2020. Megumi Fushiguro – calculating, guarded, quietly intense – became one of the most talked-about characters in the series, and Uchida’s vocal work gave the character its signature restraint. As the franchise expanded through films and additional seasons, his performance remained a consistent anchor. The exposure from Jujutsu Kaisen placed him in the tier of seiyuu whose names now precede a project’s announcement as a genuine draw.

Wind Breaker, Shangri-La Frontier, and the Road to 2025

Recent years have kept Uchida at the center of major productions. He led the cast of Shangri-La Frontier as Rakuro Hizutome/Sunraku across both seasons (2023-2025), voicing a gamer protagonist whose energy demanded a very different register from his previous dramatic work. In 2024, he took on Haruka Sakura in Wind Breaker, an action anime that ran into a second season in 2025. He also voiced Kawaki in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations and Reo Mikage in Blue Lock, maintaining a presence across multiple simultaneous top-tier productions. Into 2025, he appeared in Lazarus, the MAPPA sci-fi thriller that aired on Adult Swim, as well as Medalist and the Wandance anime.

Music Career and Parallel Identity as an Artist

Alongside his seiyuu work, Uchida built a sustained career as a solo recording artist. His debut single “NEW WORLD” under King Records in May 2018 peaked at ninth on the Oricon Weekly Singles Chart. Subsequent releases charted consistently, and his debut album HORIZON reached seventh on the Oricon Albums Weekly Chart in 2019. Live performances – including two-day runs at Makuhari Messe and his first Nippon Budokan shows in 2022 – established him as a performer with a fanbase that shows up. Several of his singles served as anime ending themes, weaving his artist identity directly into his casting work.
