Nidhogg

Video Game: Devil May Cry 5

Lurking deep within the tangled roots of the Qliphoth in Red Grave City, Nidhogg is the kind of threat that looks far more dangerous than it actually is. This demonic parasite has latched onto the infernal tree to feast on the harvested human blood flowing through it, making it a grotesque opportunist in a city already overrun by far worse.

Nidhogg’s Role in Devil May Cry 5

Encountered by V and his familiar Griffon during Mission 4, Nidhogg cuts an imposing figure at first glance: a faceless, orangish humanoid torso fused to a massive nest of Qliphoth roots, commanding three scaled, serpentine root-heads like living weapons. But the illusion of menace unravels quickly. Griffon sizes Nidhogg up in seconds, correctly diagnosing him as nothing more than a Qliphoth parasite with no ability to even leave the tree’s roots. His brute strength is real enough, yet his dim-witted aggression makes him an easy mark for a hunter as tactically shrewd as V. The fight ends with the demon forcibly yanked from his nest and put down without ceremony, his own arrogance doing half the work. Director Hideaki Itsuno confirmed that Nidhogg was specifically designed to introduce V’s familiar Nightmare to players in a controlled, memorable way.
