Stephanie Hsu’s Path from Stage to Screen – and Into the Booth
Raised in Torrance, California, with Taiwanese-American roots, Stephanie Hsu built her foundation far from Hollywood cameras. After training at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and earning her BFA in Drama in 2012, she cut her teeth in experimental New York theater, eventually landing on Broadway as Karen the Computer in SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical. That early comfort with character work – inhabiting something mechanical and non-human with warmth – quietly set the stage for what was coming in animation.
Everything Everywhere All at Once and the Roles That Changed Everything
The dual performance as Joy Wang and the multiverse-unraveling Jobu Tupaki in A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) rewrote Hsu’s trajectory entirely. Playing a grieving daughter and a nihilistic cosmic force simultaneously, across genres that shift frame to frame, earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. The film’s success gave her leverage to take more ambitious roles across every medium – including animation.
Blue Eye Samurai, The Wild Robot, and the Animation Work
Her highest-profile voice performance to date is Vontra in DreamWorks’ The Wild Robot (2024), a calculated yet conflicted robot pursuing the film’s protagonist across its wilderness setting. The role demanded a cold precision that contrasted sharply against the film’s emotional core – a challenge Hsu handled with economy. That same year she voiced Golden Glider in the DC animated series Kite Man: Hell Yeah! and Dr. Sleech in Amazon’s The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy.
Earlier, her portrayal of Ise across two episodes of Netflix’s Blue Eye Samurai (2023) placed her inside one of the most critically decorated animated series of that decade – a series that actively prioritized Asian heritage talent for its voice cast. Also in 2023, she voiced Skyler’s Mom in the Adam Sandler Netflix feature Leo and the Mayor’s Wife in The Monkey King.
Steps and the Margot Role
Netflix’s Steps (November 2026) positions Hsu as one of two leads in an animated Cinderella retelling told from the stepsisters’ point of view. She voices Margot opposite Ali Wong’s Lilith characters reimagined as complex and sympathetic rather than simply villainous. Directed by Alyce Tzue and John Ripa, with Bette Midler as the Fairy Godmother and Amanda Seyfried as Cinderella, the film is produced by Amy Poehler. It marks Hsu’s first animated feature lead.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Television Work
Running parallel to her film career, Hsu spent multiple seasons as Mei on Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, a role that gave her recurring television presence and expanded her dramatic range beyond comedy. She also appeared in American Born Chinese (2023) as Shiji Niangniang, reuniting with several Everything Everywhere cast members. In 2024, her live-action work continued with the Peacock series Laid, where she also served as executive producer.
