Takayuki Ishii’s Path Through Japan’s Voice Acting Industry

The route to recognition in Japan’s seiyuu world rarely runs straight. For Takayuki Ishii, born February 10 in Ibaraki Prefecture, the climb required years of disciplined ensemble work – filling out casts as unnamed soldiers, guards, background characters, and side roles across dozens of anime series and video games. That foundation, built quietly across titles from the 2010s onward, made the larger opportunities meaningful when they came.

Affiliated with I’m Enterprise, Ishii worked across an unusually wide range of productions in his early career: fantasy series, sports anime, slice-of-life titles, action franchises. His output across that period reads like a cross-section of mainstream anime production itself – brief appearances in Sword Art Online: Alicization, Chainsaw Man, Golden Kamuy, and Fate/Grand Order, each adding depth to a growing resume without yet giving him a marquee credit to anchor it.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim and the Breakthrough of Takatoshi Hijiyama

Vanillaware’s 2019 PS4 title gave Ishii his defining role. Takatoshi Hijiyama in 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is a rigid 1940s soldier dropped into a science-fiction scenario that dismantles everything he knows – disciplined, masculine, and placed at the center of one of the game’s most emotionally resonant storylines. The performance demanded range rarely asked of supporting cast work: stoicism, confusion, and an understated emotional arc that the game’s developers singled out in public commentary. Designer Koichi Maenou noted Ishii’s interpretation was so fully committed it required direction to pull back on certain emotional moments.

The role stuck. Ishii appeared at the game’s 1st Anniversary celebration stream alongside Jun Fukuyama and other cast members, a sign of how closely the performance had become identified with the character. When Atlus and Vanillaware later brought 13 Sentinels to Nintendo Switch in 2022, that association carried forward.

Game Credits and a Broadening Footprint

Beyond 13 Sentinels, Ishii built a meaningful video game credit list. His role as Sharrkan in Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven arrived in 2024 as part of Square Enix’s remake of the beloved RPG – a production with a large ensemble cast and significant fan attention. The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie added an Ebon Defense Force credit to his RPG portfolio, while Unicorn Overlord gave him the role of Nigel in Vanillaware’s 2024 tactical RPG, deepening his connection to that studio.

On the anime side, his recurring credit as The Justice across seven episodes of Engage Kiss in 2022 demonstrated his ability to hold a named supporting character through a season-length run. Trigun Stampede in 2023 added his voice to one of that year’s most-discussed anime revivals. In 2024, Kaiju No. 8 – the Production I.G adaptation of Naoya Matsumoto’s manga – brought another series credit. His range of live-action dubbing work, including contributions to Terminator Zero, shows the breadth of production contexts he operates across.

Clevatess and the Ongoing 2025-2026 Slate

Ishii’s 2025 credits continued to accumulate. Clevatess, an original anime series, added him to its cast across multiple episodes in supporting roles. Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave in 2026 brought a new game credit – a Buccaneer role in the latest entry of Nintendo and Intelligent Systems’ flagship strategy RPG franchise. The steady cadence of new credits across anime, games, and original productions signals a seiyuu working consistently within Japan’s mid-tier ensemble voice acting structure, with a firm foothold in the game space that distinguishes him from many of his peers.
