Xochitl Gomez’s Journey from Silver Screen to the Animated World
The entertainment industry rarely produces talent that moves so seamlessly from stage to screen to voice booth before turning twenty. Raised in Los Angeles, California, with Mexican roots and a bilingual upbringing, Xochitl Gomez started performing in musical theater at age five and completed 22 full-length productions by the time she was twelve. That early discipline in vocal and physical expression laid the groundwork for everything that followed.
Breaking Through: From Raven’s Home to the Marvel Universe
Her screen debut arrived in 2018 on Disney Channel’s Raven’s Home, followed by a recurring role as Dawn Schafer in the first season of Netflix’s The Baby-Sitters Club (2020). Then came the role that changed everything. Cast as America Chavez in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), she became one of the youngest actors to portray a Marvel superhero on the big screen, with the film earning over $955 million worldwide. She trained in martial arts, wushu, kickboxing, and stunts to earn the part, going through multiple rounds of auditions and a screen test with Benedict Cumberbatch before being confirmed. At 16 during the film’s release, her performance drew praise for its warmth and emotional grounding amid the franchise’s high-stakes spectacle.
The Cat in the Hat and a Voice Acting Debut
In 2024, Warner Bros. announced Gomez as the voice of Gabby in their upcoming animated feature The Cat in the Hat (November 6, 2026), directed by Alessandro Carloni and Erica Rivinoja. Gabby a re-imagined version of Sally from the original Dr. Seuss book – is an older teenager navigating a difficult move to a new town when the chaos-agent Cat, voiced by Bill Hader, arrives to turn everything sideways. The film marks Gomez’s first full animated voice role, placing her alongside Matt Berry, Quinta Brunson, America Ferrera, and Giancarlo Esposito. The project also reunites her with the broader Warner Bros. Animation ecosystem just as the studio has been rebuilding its theatrical animation identity.
Dancing with the Stars and a Platform for Representation
Outside acting, Gomez competed in season 32 of Dancing with the Stars in 2023, winning the inaugural Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy with partner Valentin Chmerkovskiy at age 17 the youngest celebrity to compete that season. The win extended her profile beyond genre films and into mainstream entertainment. Throughout her career, she has been open about representing Mexican-American identity on screen, particularly in the context of playing queer Latina characters like America Chavez.
