Anna Campbell’s Voice Work and the Characters That Define Her Career
Portland, Oregon gave the games industry one of its most recognizable voices – and for years, many players had no idea who was behind it. Anna Campbell holds a BA in Drama from Vassar College, and that training gave her a foundation that shows in how she approaches character work: methodical, specific, and with a clear sense of physicality even when the only output is sound.
Her entry into major video game voice work came with Lost Planet 3 in 2013, where she voiced Grace Peyton. That role served as a quiet precursor to what would become her defining franchise work. When Respawn Entertainment was building Titanfall 2 in 2016, Campbell was cast as Ash – a simulacrum Pilot whose cold, precise delivery required a vocal performance that balanced menace with an almost surgical calm. It landed.
Ash, Titanfall 2, and a Character Built to Last
Most voice performances tie an actor to a single game. Campbell’s run as Ash has stretched across an entire franchise. Her original 2016 performance in Titanfall 2 established the character so firmly that when Respawn folded Ash into Apex Legends as a playable Legend in Season 11 (2021), there was never a question of recasting. Campbell returned, reprising the role and bringing continuity to a character with a passionate fanbase that had followed Ash from Titanfall 2 into the battle royale era.
The character’s arc – going from an antagonist in a first-person shooter to a full Legend in one of the world’s most-played live-service games – is unusual in gaming, and Campbell’s consistent presence across that journey made it feel earned. Her vocal work on Ash demonstrates a tight control of register: clipped consonants, a flat affect undercut by moments of cutting sarcasm, and a delivery that makes the character feel genuinely inhuman without becoming cartoonish.
God of War Ragnarok and the Valkyrie Gunnr
In 2022, Campbell joined the God of War Ragnarok cast as Gunnr – a Valkyrie whose voice and likeness were both drawn from Campbell directly. Santa Monica Studio’s motion capture approach meant her physical performance was embedded into the character in a way that goes beyond standard voice work. Campbell’s portrayal of Gunnr appears in both God of War Ragnarok and God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla, adding a mythological dimension to a career that has primarily lived in the science fiction space. The contrast between Ash’s cold futurism and Gunnr’s mythic weight shows a range that purely genre-based typecasting would have missed entirely.
