Johnny Young’s Path From Live-Action Sets to Signature Game Roles

A career that started in front of the camera took an unexpected turn into recording booths and motion-capture stages. Before gaming audiences knew his name, Young was logging credits in film and television, with appearances in projects like Ayla: The Daughter of War, the Amazon series Bosch, Ghost Whisperer, and Crossing Over. The crossover into performance capture and voice work came through a community of actors and gamers, and a friendship with Charlet Chung, the voice of Overwatch’s D.Va, opened the door to his first widely heard character. That early break, playing D.Va’s friend Dae-hyun Park in Blizzard’s animated short Shooting Star, leaned on a Korean-English delivery that became something of a calling card.

Apex Legends and the Voice of Crypto

The role that turned a working actor into a recognizable presence arrived with Respawn’s battle royale. Young provides the voice for Crypto, the surveillance hacker added to the Apex Legends roster, and his contribution went past the microphone: he also handled the character’s facial reference and motion-capture performance. What sets the relationship apart is how he carried it beyond the studio. As an active Twitch streamer, he often slips into the character live, dropping in-game lines on request, which built a direct line between the performer and the people playing the game. To a large part of the Apex community, the man and the hacker have become difficult to separate.

From Squid Game to Infinity Train

Korean-language productions reaching global audiences gave Young a steady lane in English-language dubbing. He voiced Min-Gi Park, one of the two leads in the fourth book of Cartoon Network’s Infinity Train, a part that asked for warmth and quiet frustration in equal measure. His most visible dub credit came with Netflix’s Squid Game, where he supplied the English voice of Lee Myung-gi, the disgraced cryptocurrency streamer designated Player 333. Work matching Korean and Japanese on-screen performers has stayed a throughline, including additional voice work on the live-action Ghost in the Shell adaptation. Away from the booth, he trains in Muay Thai and Brazilian jiu-jitsu and keeps a regular streaming schedule.
