Leonard Wu’s Path from Washington D.C. to the Ghost of Tsushima

The road to Ryuzo did not begin in a recording booth. Long before Leonard Wu became the face of one of PlayStation’s most memorable antagonists, he was a Washington D.C. native absorbing the discipline of Chinese opera at the Chu Shan Chinese Opera Institute under masters Zhu Chu Shan and Judy Huang. That foundation – physical, precise, rooted in classical performance – shaped the kind of actor Sony Interactive Entertainment would eventually cast to carry the emotional weight of Ghost of Tsushima’s most conflicted character.

After graduating from UCLA with a BA in English, Wu built his screen career methodically. Television roles in NCIS, Bones, and a recurring part in Netflix’s Marco Polo as the Mongolian warrior Orus introduced him to international audiences. The physicality he brought to those roles – he is an endurance athlete, Muay Thai practitioner, and Spartan racer outside of acting – made him a natural fit for performance capture work, the bridge that would take him into video games.

Ghost of Tsushima and the Role That Changed Everything

When Ghost of Tsushima launched in 2020, Ryuzo stood out immediately. The character – a former childhood friend of protagonist Jin Sakai who turns against him to lead the Straw Hat ronin – demanded an actor who could play loyalty and betrayal as two sides of the same coin. Wu’s performance delivered exactly that. The voice work combined with full motion capture, and the result was a villain whose tragedy felt genuinely earned rather than manufactured. Players and critics took notice, and the role established Wu as a serious voice acting talent, not just a live-action crossover.

Rise of the Ronin and Continued Work in the Samurai Genre

The success of Ghost of Tsushima opened doors in a genre that clearly suits Wu’s performance style. In 2024, he voiced Shinpachi Nagakura in Rise of the Ronin, Team Ninja’s action RPG set during Japan’s late Edo period. Nagakura is a historical figure – a founding member of the Shinsengumi – and Wu’s portrayal brought the character into the English version of the game’s story as a key ally for the player character. It was a role that required both vocal authority and a sense of period-specific gravitas.

Ghost of Yotei and the Yotei Six

In 2025, Wu returned to the Ghost universe for Ghost of Yotei, the standalone sequel set 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima. His character, Thousand Blades Toramasa, is one of the Yotei Six – the primary antagonist group opposing protagonist Atsu. The casting placed Wu on the opposite end of the moral spectrum from his Ryuzo role, this time as an outright villain rather than a tragic former ally.
