Chobei Aza

Surviving on the cursed island of Kotaku demands more than skill – it demands the willingness to become something beyond human, and no one embodies that more than the infamous Bandit King. Aza Chōbei enters Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku as a death row convict recruited alongside other criminals to retrieve the Elixir of Life for the shogun, with the promise of a pardon waiting on the other side – if he lives.

Chōbei’s Personality and Role

Ruthless and borderline feral in combat, Chōbei is the kind of man who sees violence not as a last resort, but as a preferred language. He attacked a Dōshi on sight even when the creature attempted to resolve the standoff peacefully, simply because negotiation bored him. Yet beneath the brutality runs a deep, almost tender devotion to his younger brother Tōma – he once self-inflicted the facial scars and lost eye he carries to protect him, and throughout the island arc, every strategic or reckless choice he makes circles back to keeping Tōma safe. Like Tōma, he follows a survival philosophy rooted in adaptation: bend to the environment or break, and Chōbei has never broken.

Chōbei’s Tao Transformation

What sets Chōbei apart from every other convict on Kotaku is his terrifying willingness to absorb Plant Tao – the very power that robs most humans of their sanity and form. He undergoes a monstrous transformation during his battle with Gabimaru, losing control entirely and inadvertently turning on Tōma before Mei’s intervention forces him back. His body’s ability to push the limits of Tao assimilation makes him not just a brutal fighter, but a biological anomaly that even the island’s divine rulers found difficult to categorize.
