Stephen Root’s Career Built on Characters Nobody Else Could Play

When a Florida-born actor walks a Broadway stage in 1980 with a National Shakespeare Company tour, few would predict he’d one day become one of American animation’s most recognized voices. That’s the Stephen Root story in miniature – a career built entirely on the unexpected. After years of stage work in New York and a BFA from the University of Florida, Root made his way to Los Angeles where he began accumulating a body of work that would quietly become one of the most impressive in American entertainment.

King of the Hill and the Voice That Stuck

Two characters on Mike Judge’s long-running animated series King of the Hill defined what Root could do with voice alone. As Bill Dauterive, the divorced, down-and-out Army barber clinging to the edges of Hank Hill’s social circle, he delivered something genuinely melancholy inside a comedy framework. As Buck Strickland, Hank’s manipulative and morally bankrupt boss, he found a completely different register – louder, more predatory, funnier in a darker way. The series ran from 1997 to 2010 and returned in 2025, with Root reprising both roles after a 15-year gap. Those two characters, sharing the same actor’s voice but nothing else, show what separates Root from most voice performers.

Beyond Animation – Office Space, Barry, and the Coen Brothers

The role of Milton Waddams in Office Space (1999) turned Root into a cult figure overnight. Milton – mumbling, stapler-obsessed, dangerously overlooked – became one of the decade’s defining comedic characters. From there, Root built a parallel career in prestige drama, appearing in No Country for Old Men (2007), Get Out (2017), and five Coen Brothers films including The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018). His recurring role as NoHo Hank’s contact in HBO’s Barry added another dimension – comedic danger in a crime setting, which he pulled off with alarming ease. His voice credits also include Bubbles in Finding Nemo (2003) and a role in Ice Age (2002).

Grand Theft Auto VI and Brian Heder

Root’s most recent major credit arrived when he confirmed his role in Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto VI, set for release on November 19, 2026. He plays Brian Heder, a veteran drug runner based in the Leonida Keys – described by Rockstar as a figure from the “golden age of smuggling” who still runs product through a boat yard alongside his third wife. Root acknowledged at a red carpet event that his voice had already given him away months earlier, after King of the Hill fans identified him from GTA VI’s second trailer. His connection to protagonist Jason Duval places Brian Heder at the center of the game’s Florida crime world – territory that, given Root’s entire career, fits without any adjustment.
