Peter Cullen’s Six Decades at the Heart of American Animation

Few careers in voice acting carry the weight of Peter Cullen’s. The Montreal-born Canadian began performing in the early 1960s after graduating from the National Theatre School of Canada’s inaugural class – an institution that trained him in classical technique before he pivoted to radio, then to the screen. His early professional years were spent at CBC Radio doing drama, followed by television work in Quebec and a run as announcer on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour from 1967 to 1969. By the early 1980s, major American animation studios had taken notice.

What followed was one of the most sustained runs of character voice work in the medium’s history. Cullen filled the decade with a staggering range of roles: Venger in Dungeons and Dragons, KARR in Knight Rider, Mantus in The Pirates of Dark Water, Hagar in Hagar the Horrible, and Cindarr in Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light, among dozens of others. He voiced multiple characters in the Voltron series, served as its narrator, and appeared in G.I. Joe, My Little Pony, Rainbow Brite, DuckTales, and Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers as Monterey Jack.

Optimus Prime and the Role That Defined an Era

The defining moment came in 1984. Cast as Optimus Prime for The Transformers animated series, Cullen drew from an unexpected source: his brother Larry, a retired U.S. Marine Corps captain whose calm, authoritative presence in serious situations shaped the voice’s core quality. The choice to model Optimus on principled restraint rather than bombast gave the character a gravity that resonated across generations of viewers. When Optimus died in The Transformers: The Movie in 1986, the public reaction was so intense that producers reversed the decision in later seasons.

The role remained dormant for over two decades before Michael Bay’s live-action Transformers film in 2007 brought Cullen back to the booth – a casting decision that was itself a statement about the character’s inseparability from the original voice. He has reprised Optimus Prime across every major subsequent installment of the franchise, including Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Dark of the Moon, Age of Extinction, The Last Knight, Bumblebee, and Rise of the Beasts. The animated series Transformers Prime earned him an Emmy nomination. Hasbro inducted him into the Transformers Hall of Fame as one of its first four honorees and the first voice-over artist to receive that distinction.

Eeyore, the Predator, and the Range Behind the Legacy

Starting in 1988 with The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Cullen took over as Eeyore from the late Ralph Wright and made the role entirely his own. The mournful, slow cadence he brought to the donkey’s resigned outlook became the definitive interpretation for Disney across decades of films, shorts, theme park attractions, and direct-to-video productions. In 1987, Cullen contributed something entirely different: the alien vocalizations for the title creature in the original Predator film, working in a register that owed nothing to human speech. The credit stands as one of the more distinctive achievements in practical voice effects work from that period.

Later in his career, Cullen joined the cast of Amazon’s animated series Invincible in its second season, voicing Thaedus – a role that placed him alongside a new generation of voice talent and introduced his work to audiences unfamiliar with the franchise era that made him famous. In December 2023, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences presented him with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2nd Children’s and Family Emmy Awards, a recognition that landed as something close to official confirmation of what the audience already knew.
