Joel Miller

Video Game:The Last of Us

Twenty years of grief have a way of hollowing a person out, and by the time players first meet Joel Miller in Naughty Dog's landmark 2013 survival game, the hollowing is nearly complete. Once a devoted father from Texas, Joel now operates in the shadows of a FEDRA-controlled quarantine zone in Boston, surviving as a smuggler in a world where cordyceps fungus has decimated civilisation and stripped away everything he once held dear.

Joel Miller’s Moral Complexity in The Last of Us

What separates Joel from the average post-apocalyptic protagonist is the weight he carries in every scene. His daughter Sarah‘s death at the hands of a soldier on the night of the outbreak didn’t just break him, it rewrote his moral code entirely. A man who once paid a mortgage and dreamed of playing guitar on the porch became someone who traffics people and weapons without blinking. When he’s tasked with escorting the immune teenager Ellie across a hostile, ruined America, the assignment is purely transactional at first. But the road cracks him open. Slowly, painfully, Ellie becomes something he cannot afford to lose, a reflection of Sarah, a reason to feel again. The game’s most debated moment, Joel’s decision to slaughter the Firefly surgeons rather than allow Ellie to be sacrificed for a potential cure, is not a villain’s act or a hero’s triumph, it’s a father’s desperate irrationality, and Naughty Dog dares players to sit in the discomfort of that truth.

Who Voices Joel Miller in The Last of Us?

Troy Baker brings Joel to life in the English version through full performance capture, lending the character a laconic, guarded presence that cracks open at precisely the right moments. Baker is one of the most recognised voices in games, with major credits including Booker DeWitt in BioShock Infinite, Sam Drake in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and Talion in the Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor series. Notably, Baker himself is a musician and guitarist in real life, which adds an unspoken authenticity to Joel’s own love of the instrument. In the Japanese version, veteran voice actor Koichi Yamadera takes on the role, a performer whose extraordinary range has made him a fixture in Japanese entertainment for decades, known internationally for roles such as Spike Spiegel in Cowboy Bebop and Ryoji Kaji in Neon Genesis Evangelion.
