Gi Nattak

Ancient hatred given form, Gi Nattak stands as one of the most grueling boss encounters in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, channeling centuries of rage from beyond death. His confrontation with Nanaki (Red XIII) inside the Cave of the Gi marks the emotional core of Chapter 10, “Watcher of the Vale.”

Gi Nattak’s Story Role

The Gi were a people driven to extinction and cursed to wander as spirits, rejected by the Lifestream itself. Gi Nattak, their leader, sealed himself and his clan in an underground cavern beneath Cosmo Canyon, where their hatred festered for generations alongside a suffocating red miasma. His confrontation with Nanaki is deeply personal: it was Gi Nattak who once led an assault on Cosmo Canyon, waging war against Red XIII’s species and sealing the fate of the Gi people.

Gi Nattak’s Personality

Fury and grief are the only things keeping Gi Nattak anchored to the mortal plane. His entire existence after death became a vessel for the Gi’s collective resentment, a curse so deep that even the planet refuses to receive his soul. There is no reasoning with him, no redemption arc waiting at the end of the fight, only the weight of an ancient grudge that has long outlived the civilization it belongs to.

Boss Fight Mechanics

What makes this fight notorious is its three-phase structure that constantly shifts the rules. In Phase 2, Gi Nattak turns invisible and floods the arena with 15 Soul Flames, each capable of possessing statues to curse the party with effects like halving HP and MP, draining ATB, or shrinking the battlefield. At roughly 25% HP, he drops Doom on the entire party, a countdown that no accessory can resist and that only his defeat can stop.
