Chocobo Bill

Running a ranch just outside Midgar is one thing, but doing it with the kind of weathered charm and dry wit that makes every party member stop and smile? That’s Chocobo Bill’s specialty. A beloved fixture across the Final Fantasy VII series, this rugged old rancher makes a memorable return in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth as the first friendly face Cloud and his companions encounter in the open world.
Chocobo Bill’s Story Role
Bill runs his eponymous chocobo ranch in the Grasslands region outside Midgar alongside his grandchildren Billy and Chloe. In Rebirth, players first encounter him on the road with a broken-down truck during the quest “A New Journey Begins,” where he points Cloud’s party toward an abandoned dock in the swamps and even teases Cloud about his obvious closeness with both Tifa and Aerith. More than just comic relief, Bill serves the critical mechanical purpose of introducing the party to chocobo wrangling, which becomes essential for traversing the game’s expansive open world.
Bill’s Personality
Warm and lighthearted on the surface, Bill is quietly driven by a sharp business sense, never missing a chance to turn a profit from renting out his birds for transport, labor, and races. His appearance matches his personality: an elderly man with wild spiky gray hair, a forked beard, grayish-blue eyes, and tan skin hardened by years of ranch work. In Rebirth, he gets a slight wardrobe upgrade with dark blue jeans, brown boots, a leather tool belt, and a whip on his hip, giving him a more rugged, road-worn edge compared to his original look.
