Muzu

Muzu is one of the five loyal “Castle Uncles” who serve the Valley of the Wind in Studio Ghibli’s landmark 1984 animated film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Alongside Mito, Gol, Gikkuri, and Niga, Muzu functions as a trusted elder advisor and guardian of the Valley, a small but resilient kingdom struggling to survive in a post-apocalyptic world choked by the toxic Fukai forest and its giant mutant insects.

Though Muzu is a supporting character without the dramatic arc of Nausicaä herself, his role highlights the deep communal bond that holds the Valley together. The Valley’s people are not just passive bystanders in the chaos of warring empires; figures like Muzu represent the older generation clinging to stability while a younger, more empathetic worldview, embodied by Nausicaä, points toward a different kind of survival. His presence adds texture to the Valley’s intimate, almost family-like political structure, where elders and uncles carry real weight rather than empty titles.

Voice Cast

In the 2005 Disney English dub, Muzu is voiced by James Arnold Taylor, an American voice actor widely recognized for his long-running portrayal of Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and for voicing Ratchet in the Ratchet & Clank franchise and Tidus in Final Fantasy X.

In the original Japanese version, Muzu shares a voice with King Jhil: veteran actor Mahito Tsujimura. Tsujimura was a prolific Japanese performer affiliated with 81 Produce, known for roles in Dragon Ball Z as Daikaioh and appearances across decades of anime and live-action projects before his passing in November 2018.
