Sean Schemmel’s Accidental Ascent to the Voice of Goku

Before Dragon Ball Z ever crossed his path, Sean Schemmel was on a completely different trajectory. A graduate of the University of North Texas with a background in music composition, he had built his early years around classical French horn performance. Voice acting was not the plan. It took a friend’s nudge toward a Funimation casting call to change that – and even then, Schemmel walked in auditioning for Captain Ginyu, a minor villain earmarked to die in the first season. He didn’t get that role. Instead, two weeks into recording, he was quietly informed that he had been cast as the lead of one of the most consumed anime franchises on the planet.

That lead was Son Goku. And Schemmel has never left the role since.

Dragon Ball and the Weight of a Franchise

Since stepping into the booth in 1999, Schemmel has voiced Goku across every major Dragon Ball anime production – Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, Dragon Ball Z Kai, Dragon Ball Super, and Dragon Ball Daima, the final animated series overseen by the late Akira Toriyama before his death in 2024. No English voice actor has held the role longer or more continuously. In the gaming space, that continuity extends to Dragon Ball FighterZ, Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero (2024), and Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, among others.

The physical demands of the role became publicly known in 2025, when Schemmel revealed he had passed out three times during the recording of Dragon Ball Daima’s English dub finale – a consequence of the sustained vocal intensity that Goku’s transformation sequences require. It was not the first time; he had previously passed out during a Super Saiyan 4 recording in Dragon Ball GT. These details added a layer of physicality to a performance most audiences experience only through their screens.

Beyond Goku, Schemmel voices multiple recurring characters within the same franchise, including King Kai and Nail, and took on the distinct vocal challenge of Goku Black – a villain who inhabits the same body as the hero but demands an entirely different presence.

Lucario, Pokémon, and the Range Beyond Dragon Ball

Outside the Dragon Ball universe, Schemmel’s most recognized game performance is Lucario, the Aura Pokemon, carried across Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. His Pokémon work extends to supporting roles across multiple seasons of the anime, from Pokémon Journeys through to Pokémon Horizons: The Series. In video games, he voiced Batman in The Dark Knight Rises game adaptation (2012), Black Doom in Shadow the Hedgehog, and Sun Wukong in Smite – a notable casting given that Goku is directly derived from the same mythological source character.

My Hero Academia: Vigilantes and Recent Work

Schemmel’s most recent major franchise credit is Christopher Skyline, also known as Captain Celebrity, in My Hero Academia: Vigilantes (2025-2026), the prequel series to My Hero Academia. The role marks a clean departure from his signature Dragon Ball range – Skyline is a brash, American-style superhero, giving Schemmel room to operate in different registers. His output in the broader anime dubbing space spans decades and studios, including work for NYAV Post – where he also served as an ADR director and scriptwriter, shaping the English versions of multiple series from the production side of the glass.
