Josh Keaton’s Journey From Child Performer to Animation Icon

Few careers in American voice acting span as many beloved franchises as that of Josh Keaton, born Joshua Luis Wiener on February 8, 1979, in Hacienda Heights, California, to a Peruvian mother and a New York-born father. Spanish was his first language, a bilingual upbringing that would later expand his casting range. His screen debut came as an infant in a commercial, but the microphone found him early: at 11, he performed in Captain Planet and the Planeteers, and by 1991 he was voicing Jules Brown in Back to the Future: The Animated Series.

The Spectacular Spider-Man and the Role That Defined a Generation

The casting that cemented Keaton’s reputation came in 2008, when The Spectacular Spider-Man premiered on The CW. His portrayal of Peter Parker across two seasons earned a devoted fanbase that persists long after the show’s cancellation. The attachment was so strong that when The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes later dubbed his recorded Spider-Man lines with another actor, fans mounted an organized campaign on his behalf – a response Keaton handled with characteristic grace, publicly redirecting frustration away from the replacement actor. He extended the web-slinging work across games including Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and Spider-Man: Edge of Time, while also voicing Max Dillon/Electro in Insomniac’s 2018 Spider-Man game – doing both voice and motion capture for the character.

Metal Gear, Ninja Gaiden, and the Video Game Legacy

Long before Spectacular Spider-Man, Keaton earned serious game-industry credentials. His turn as the young Revolver Ocelot in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004) gave one of gaming’s most mythologized characters a cocky, formative edge that fans cite as one of the definitive vocal performances in the series. He also voiced Ryu Hayabusa in the console versions of Ninja Gaiden and has been the voice of King Anduin Wrynn in World of Warcraft since 2012 – one of the longest-running continuous character commitments in the MMORPG space.

Voltron: Legendary Defender and the “Space Dad” Era

Announced at WonderCon 2016, Keaton’s casting as Takashi “Shiro” Shirogane in Voltron: Legendary Defender gave him the role that fans nicknamed “Space Dad” – a title he has leaned into across conventions and social media ever since. The Netflix series ran from 2016 to 2018 across 78 episodes, and Shiro’s arc through trauma, leadership, and sacrifice gave Keaton material with genuine dramatic weight. The role brought a new wave of younger fans to his catalog.

Continuing Work Through the 2020s

Activity has not slowed. In 2024, Keaton voiced Dr. Tofu Ono in the Ranma 1/2 remake and Captain America in the X-Men ’97 episode “Bright Eyes.” He also appeared in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. Into 2025, credits include Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Dune: Awakening, Marvel Cosmic Invasion, and the animated series Wandance. He also maintains a live-action background with past appearances in The Young and the Restless and Will & Grace, plus his earlier career as a member of the Michael Jackson-discovered boy band No Authority.
