Motoko Kusanagi’s Role and Personality in Ghost in the Shell

Nearly every cell in her body is synthetic, yet the question that haunts Kusanagi throughout the film is deceptively simple: does a ghost still live inside all that machinery? She leads Section 9 with cold precision, a brooding commander who hand-picks the barely-augmented Togusa for her team precisely because she believes homogeneity makes any unit vulnerable. Her mind moves between tactical brilliance and abstract philosophy without missing a beat. Who Voices Motoko Kusanagi in Ghost in the Shell?

In the original 1995 film and across subsequent Japanese productions including Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, the role belonged to the late Atsuko Tanaka, whose deep and uniquely measured voice became so inseparable from the character that fans simply called her “the Major” in tribute. Tanaka, who also brought the same commanding gravity to the titular character in the Bayonetta franchise and to Lisa Lisa in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, passed away in August 2024 and is mourned as one of the most iconic voices in anime history. For the English dub of the original 1995 film, Mimi Woods voiced the Major, while Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, who won the 2007 American Anime Award for Best Actress for the role, took over for the Stand Alone Complex series.
