Shorter Wong

Shorter Wong’s Role in Banana Fish
Running Chinatown’s criminal organization at a remarkably young age, Shorter operates with a sense of honor that sets him apart from the brutal world around him. He spies for Ash, pulls him out of danger, and extends that same fierce protectiveness to Eiji Okumura, a relative outsider he embraces without hesitation. His story takes a devastating turn when the drug known as Banana Fish is weaponized against him, stripping away his agency and forcing Ash into an impossible choice. That final exchange between the two, Shorter begging to be freed as Ash’s voice cuts through the drug’s hold, is among the most gut-wrenching moments in the entire series. After his death, Ash begins wearing Shorter’s signature sunglasses, a quiet tribute to a friend he never stops carrying with him.
Who Voices Shorter Wong in Banana Fish?
In the original Japanese production, Shorter Wong is voiced by Makoto Furukawa, the acclaimed seiyuu best known for bringing Saitama to life in One-Punch Man and Miyuki Shirogane in Kaguya-sama: Love Is War. Furukawa brings a natural ease and underlying warmth to the role that makes Shorter’s arc hit even harder. An official English dub of Banana Fish began its rollout in August 2026; individual English cast credits for the dub had not been confirmed in available sources at the time of publication.
