Isshin Ashina

The founder and elder statesman of the Ashina clan, he built his domain through rebellion and blood two decades before the events of Sekiro: No Defeat, yet the anime finds him bedridden as rival forces close in on everything he created.

Isshin Ashina’s Role in Sekiro: No Defeat

Bearing the title of Sword Saint, Isshin is a figure of towering legend reduced by illness to watching his grandson Genichiro make increasingly desperate choices to keep Ashina alive. His wisdom still cuts sharper than any blade, though. When Wolf storms the castle and earns an audience, Isshin does something neither lord nor general has thought to do: he gives the wandering shinobi a name. That moment, dubbing him Sekiro, the one-armed wolf, anchors the anime’s identity from its very first trailer. Behind closed doors, Isshin has also been slipping out disguised as the masked wanderer Tengu of Ashina, quietly protecting his land the only way a true warrior knows how, personally. He fundamentally disagrees with Genichiro’s plan to weaponize Kuro’s blood, and in secret he tasks physician Emma with steering Wolf toward a better path.

Who Voices Isshin Ashina in Sekiro: No Defeat?

Tetsuo Kanao reprises the role he originated in the video game, bringing the same gravity to Isshin that made the character so memorable in FromSoftware’s original release. Kanao is a veteran of the Theatre Company Subaru whose anime career spans decades, though wider recognition came through his turn as the cunning alien villain Evolto in Kamen Rider Build. His ability to layer authority with quiet warmth makes Isshin feel genuinely irreplaceable in this cast.
